New Motor for Rods Mad Maxy Ute

Recommended Posts

I've got a Protec water pump and be fucked if I can find bolts to fit to bolt the pulley on with! The originals don't fit, so I grabbed some M8x1.25, which should have been the metric equivalent, and they don't fit either! So now another 60k round trip into town to try again!
Fuck me!! Just make the bloody things the same as the originals!

In better news. This arrived today.

I don't think we keep xflow water pumps on the shelf anymore, but if we do and I remember at work tomorrow, I'll check what size the replacement pulley bolts are.

5/16 UNF remember?

Replacement pump would have metric thread machined into the hub.

Maybe they made it in 5/16" UNC? M8x1.0?

I think the thermostat housing bolts are 5/16" UNC, perhaps you could try one of them? Ford from factory had a funny habit of using UNC everywhere on the engine except on the flywheel, harmonic balancer and water pump pulley (UNF).

Next time, you could just undo the water pump and take it into town so you can match threads?

If worse comes to worst and you can't identify the thread, drill and tap out to 3/8" or M10 and be done with it

We have one on the shelf, but the Repco ones use M8x1.25 bolts so no idea on what yours will be.

Thanks man, I ran an M8x1.25 tap through it and all good now 👍

Today's job is to get it off the engine stand and get the flywheel, clutch and gearbox onto it!!!!

Fuck me what an afternoon!
One of the engine mount bolts was stripped, so had to run into town and get a Helicoil kit, $80 later!
But I feel better knowing all 6 engine mount bolts are doing their job.
Then finished fitting some bits and pieces and finally got it off the engine stand and got the flywheel and clutch on.
And then struggled for an hour trying to get the gearbox on by myself and fucking my back in the process!
Got the mother and father in laws to help me and finally got it lined up and on.
Into the ute tomorrow!
And now for some Beam to dull the pain.

She'll be right 😁 It's going back in tomorrow!!! Should get it fired up in the afternoon or Thursday. Back to work on Friday.

Just got the OEM rocker cover on there so I don't get the Aussiespeed one dirty 😍

Stripped an old dizzy down so I could use the shaft to spin the oil pump up. Worked a treat! I'm glad I ask a heap of questions, 'cause you guys have the answers. Saved me more than a few times!

did you fit the box with the bell housing as one unit?

i started doing the bell housing first(where possible) then stabbing the box onto the bell housing. much less risk of injury

sounds like it's back on track again.. i had to fix a water pump bolt.. glad i did have the engine still out of the car when i fixed it

No in one unit. Wish I had thought to do it like you said. 😋

necessity is the mother of invention..

i invented many lighter ways of doing things like this.. i'll show a couple below.

how to lift a tiltadoor ...

0VjXWa3.jpg

lifting an auto trans into position ... using the crane(rope around the bell housing) and jack under the back

WsdGqj4.jpg

see a trend yet?

lifting the A frames up for the garage build

extra high stands..

with removable ramps..

@2redrovers is also a MASTER of improvised contraptions.. if you aren't following his thread, you MUST!!  (here's @SPArKy_Dave at forklift,  2redrovers factory move time with Rod near the doorway

I like those front wheel stands!

My Dad made them when he was working on his cars rust/exhaust/engine conversion etc. think the stands are 40cm high from memory, i left them with a mate in Tassie when i moved.. haven't needed them, but have missed them at times.

They came on some crossflow motors I picked up.

So she fired and ran.

But I fucked up and forget to tighten the fuel line!

Fuel everywhere and now the battery is flat.  So tightened the fuel line and charging the battery to try again.
