93-96 XG Outback replacement Monroe Shock Absorbers

Recommended Posts

A few people with XG Outbacks will probably be looking for new shocks at some stage, this info will save you some time finding replacements.
Thanks to Troy at Monroe Australia sales for the great info and service. Champ!

The Original XG Outback shocks are:
Front- Monroe T.V.E. 848-18045 AA
Rear- Monroe T.V.E. 848-18080 AA

They were a Monroe Magnum shock.
These part numbers/shocks no longer exist.

New replacements are:

Monroe Gas Magnum TDT

Fronts are same as all XG front shocks.
They are 10mm shorter in travel than original Outback spec which Monroe says is OK.
Rears are longer and NOT standard height XG shock.

FRONT SHOCKS.
Part no. 16-0101..
, which is now obsolete but you can still buy these online.
The new model is not available at the time I wrote this, but new part no is 331036MM.
Compressed and Extended lengths, measured from base plate to base of top stud where first washer sits, are:
Compressed: 230mm
Extended: 355mm

REAR SHOCKS.
Part no. 16-0207
Current part number, plenty of stock.
Compressed and Extended lengths,
measured from base of each stud where first washer sits, are:
Compressed: 296mm
Extended: 496mm

This info will help people get the appropriate heavy duty shocks for their Outbacks from Monroe or use the specs to size up replacement Koni , Bilsteins or coil overs.

Hope this helps some peeps.

Outback Jack.

Thats awesome info mate.

This thread deserves to be stickied to the top!

See if you can maybe get the valving specs from Monroe,

for those original discontinued T.V.E Outback shocks?

People could then get Koni or Bilsteins set up, exactly as per the original units?

Cheers Dave,

The valving info for the original T.V.E.

shocks is no longer available, have been discontinued for a long time now.

Those old original part no's came from the rears on my spares Outback and an original set of fronts I had stashed away from my Red Outback.

I have decided I am going to try out the Monroe Gas Magnum TDT's on my Outback.

I managed to get a really good price on them at $520 for all 4 corners, delivered.

I will put them to the test on the bumpy, lumpy roads out here.

Outback Jack, I found some old pics of NOS HD Motorcraft shock absorbers...
They might be handy to have in this thread?

Not sure if they're the same as the XG Outbacks, or just for XF/XG Country Pack optioned vehicles?

Every lil bit helps Dave. :)
Wasn't even aware Motorcraft did shocks.
I'm not sure on the Country pack option for XF/XG. It might just be h/duty shocks and no change in ride height.

Those fronts even at standard height would be fine, but its the rears in the Outback that are 295mm compressed and extended are 495mm.
When I pull the GT gas out in a couple of weeks, I will get the part numbers and measure the compressed and extended lengths. Think they will be standard length , not Outback spec knowing the slackers who supplied them.

Like the country pack, the Outbacks just needed heavy duty shocks to cope with the rougher roads.

Does the spare XG Outback, still have the original shock absorbers in it?
Could you remove them for pics, to add into this thread?
Yes, the shocks in the spare Outback look original Dave.
I'm not pulling them out just to put up some pics.... and then I'd have to put them back in. They are plain black.
I have already crawled around under her to supply the original shock part numbers off them for this thread.

Sorry mate, but I think you forget I have a back injury and am on a disability pension. I really struggle to do anything on the ute.
It's going to be a big enough job for me just to fit the new magnums up to Big Red when they get here, I'm only doing that because I can't afford to pay someone else to do it.

Here are the shocks that will suit XG Outbacks and Long reach models.

They are Monroe Gas Magnum TDT.
Front 16-0101
Rear 160207

As stated earlier, Fronts are just standard XG. 10mm less travel than Outback spec, which I'm assured is fine.
Look very similar to original shocks.

Rears have longer travel than standard XG at 495mm.

These are a heavier duty shock than Monroe GT gas to suit harsher roads the Outback was built for. Front shocks include shaft dust boots.

Just some Comparison pics between the Monroe GT gas I took out of the Front of the ute and the new Monroe Gas Magnum TDT's.

As you can see the Gas Magnums are a MUCH beefier shock, in the body, as well as the shaft being twice the width of the GT gas.

Here's one ready to go in, fitted with supplied dust cover to protect the upper seal of the shock, a nice touch.

Will be back with a comparison on the rears, once I get them in. Fronts are fitted up ready for a test run.

Now you can see why Magnum shocks were originally fitted to the Outbacks from new.

OK, the rear Gas Magnums are in, I was surprised by how thick the studs were and wondered if they would fit, as the GT gas were a lot thinner, but they went in no problems.
Here is the difference...

Ride in ute has tightened up and handling well.
Sorry there are no more comparison shots, had the rears put in for me as I lacked a few tools at home.
Here they are fitted.....

Well, there you go. A heavy duty option for XF-XG Ute's from Monroe.
The ride has really tightened up and ute feels a lot more planted.
The old shocks weren't in too bad condition, they were just too flimsy, you can feel the difference.

Thats all from me and Big Red on shocks time to hit the Highway...
