Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 7, 2013 Wanting to do an oil change in my Ghia wagon, it's now done 2,500km since the motor was rebuilt. Question is, do I just use normal oil ( Penrite HPR 20/60 (I think) is what I use in my ute), or should I use something else?
mcfly94 169 Posted May 7, 2013 I just use penrite, ive heard ulx110 is supposed to be good.
slydog 7,873 Posted May 8, 2013 If its a fresh engine lighter weight is needed cuz.I use straight PM 50 which sounds thick but is actually rated at 20-50.PM doesnt break down like others and has a loooong service life. 2 'Nova and Mr Polson reacted to this
Schmoburger 12 Posted May 8, 2013 I use Penrite and nothing else... Seems to maintain its viscosity better between changes than most and doesnt sludge up like some... Ie Castrol GTX. 1 mcfly94 reacted to this
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 8, 2013 Yeah fresh engine, that's why I asked. How much thinner? Just one or two grades?
slydog 7,873 Posted May 8, 2013 It comes down to how much you want it to last and how much you want to spend bud.PM is expensive but it lasts waaaay longer. Look up PM lubricants and make your own mind up bruz.
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 8, 2013 Well I want it to last but I don't want to be spending billions on oil... That said if it lasts longer you'd save by doing less oil changes? I'll look it up in the morning and decide.
bear351c 10,270 Posted May 9, 2013 If the oil you have is still from the rebuild, ditch it quick.! It will have all the cam lube, bore dust or whatever was left from the build. Penrite 10W-40 should be fine in a 'tight' engine, 20W-50 in an older one. IMHO. Make sure you change the Z9, too.
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 9, 2013 Yeah still rebuild oil, that's why I'm doing the change. Had a look at the pm lubricants, probably a bit too much for now, also no Tas distributor... Just gonna go with Penrite. Not a Z9 to change... its a Motor craft filter
slydog 7,873 Posted May 9, 2013 It did have a oil change after start up run in too didnt it?
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 9, 2013 Not sure, I'd have to ask Nova... its his old wagon. But I'd assume it was all done properly...
