crossflow roller rockers

Hi Guys, 

 

I know I know, its probably (not probably, it has) been covered many times, BUT, I have never looked into it. 

Other than the rocker cover modification, what else needs to be done to convert an EFi crossflow to run roller rockers? 

 

the engine is freshly built, ACL pistons, standard compression ratio, Crow 14892 cam, 217 lift @ .50" for both intake and exhaust. 

 

I figure i should try get the most out of this new engine.

Just a rocker cover spacer or cut & raise the low section of the EFi rocker cover from what I know, 

Yella terra "street terra" bolt on/pedestal mount are a easy fit, ST2034 from memory,

O & your EFi won't like a cam that size, heck they run ruff if you pull the dip stick out, around 206-208° is about biggest XF computer will happily run from what I've read.

yep thats the kit im going to run with. 

 

i got it wrong, the cam is 215. 

im just going to try it and see what happens :P 

I know someone running a wade cam with similar specs on standard EFi system, and he said it runs fine, even with a rough idle. might need a bit of tweaking of the vane meter and timing, but will see what happens. 

when I go turbo it will need an aftermarket ecu anyway.

thanks mate. 

Because i havent done this sort of thing before, how do i measure the AFR? 

Or is it worth me finding a workshop that can help me out?

Having a bit of a look for inspiration, ill likely end up making a portable unit out of a wide band. 
it will come in handy tuning my Escort as well.

also when you space the rocker cover for rollers, have to machine the inlet on a slight angle for the added height for the rocker cover

Just be careful modifying the rocker cover. I bought a modified one and it had warped out of shape when it was welded. Someone had cut out the lower section and welded in a flat piece on so it went straight across. The heat from the welding had pulled the front of the cover upwards and the rear slightly upwards also.

Yeh I know...

That was my old rocker cover. I bought it like that, and did not realise it had done that. otherwise id have not sold it to you. 

My neighbour seems to think he can do it without it warping. id imagine it needs to be bolted down flat while its being welded.

Ha ha, I wasn’t sure if it was you or Campo that I got it off. I think if the welder has too many amps going into the weld it is more likely to make the weld pull the surrounding material out of shape. Good luck, hopefully this time it works out nicely for you

Yeah I felt so bad after you told me it was no good 😕 

 

Well i have 3 rocker covers he can play with to get it right haha. one of them is a leaded (no knock sensor or ISC valve) cover, so im not worried if he stuffs that up getting it right. then i have 2 unleaded ones inc. the one on the original engine still in the car.

You can use a die grinder on the back of the rockers and on the close tolerance parts of the rocker cover to get clearance. Only some of the rockers hit, most clear. 

My Yella Terra rollers and rocker cover are machined like this and it gave enough clearance for a 510" lift hyd cam. Using a paper gasket and factory intake setup, everything cleared.

Though it hit when I upgraded to a 535" lift. 

 

Instead of increasing the machining, I got a piece of 4mm Ally. And used a jigsaw to cut it into a spacer to go under the cover using a paper gasket on each side. Cost me fk all and has been working for years.

I run two cork gaskets on my EFI cast cover and only had to clearance the inside of the throttle cable cutout just a tiny bit, literally a few passes with an angle grinder. All the rest of the rockers were fine. The camshaft I'm running is 550 lift. Yours is 510 lift and 215@50 duration so you should be fine.
