turbo diesel astra engine bolts to a Type 9 ford gearbox.. wonder if the auto would handle the torque.
fit a cut down cortina or falcon diff with 2.77 diff ratio and it would be interesting.

I can't like that post..... it's been contaminated with diesel AND you used the "A****" word!!

Not familiar with that one.

Not doing diesel of any kind so any of those ideas are out. Modern fuel injection engines are appealing but all I hear is dollars and engineering which is more dollars. With how many ks I do I really want to go straight gas because it just makes things cheaper on a daily basis. I love ignoring the "petrol cycle".

If we didn't live in the nanny country I'd probably consider a warm rover v8 in it just for the sound. Either that or the barra... But I'd want to just build that without having to comply with the rules of bureaucracy

I'd imagine Barra would be a head funk if you wanted it to be remotely legal.

Realistically a well built pinto and a decent auto is the easiest and probably cheapest way to go.
I've never known them to be remotely economical though, that big old weber loves a drink. Never driven one on gas.
I went from a mk5 sport to a xb Fairmont 302 back many years and my fuel costs barely changed haha.

yeah the weber on the gemini is from a 2litre pinto. uses a lot of fuel when thrashed.. was told they go well on falcon 6s even.

the falcon weber can fit, and i wonder if it would be better

Simple is good right now. The 1300 is there already but unknown if it's usable. I have been casually looking around to see if any pintos are advertised but apart from one in a basket case that was missing parts, I haven't seen any yet.

It's really all academic at this stage. Gotta make some of the rust disappear before a motor matters. I think at this point in the discussion, the general plan is for this car to be fixed up and put back on the road as a work van. A bit of a rolling advertisement I guess. I'm not sure which should be done first though, escort or Fargo, but I think I can maybe get the escort done cheaper because of the barra conversion in the Fargo probably needs engineering.

Agree with what's been stated already, I used to drive a TF Corty and the fuel bill was high, but the 2 litre went like stink.!  Prob be easier? to rebuild the 1300....

Cost of finding/repairing a Pinto, versus 1300 with Gas tank install..??

289 Windsor, shortened 9 inch..

Whoops, sorry.  😉

leave all the rust repairs in clear coat bare metal..

i linked panko to a 1.6 escort motor a while back, was 100% complete and running for $600? with a 4 speed(was removed for a 2 liter i think.) that's an identical looking engine to the 1.3 at least.

If they use the same gearbox then that could be an easy upgrade if I stick with the 1.3 to start.

Guys, my motto could probably be "I chase rust, not horsepower"... Maybe I should get that on a shirt?

Maybe ask if the Harvey Wreckers place, has the gearbox and tailshaft from the Van?

Realistically, it's probably worth more, being done completely stock?

Unless it has to be an Auto?

None of the modern alloy head 4cylinders will like LPG IMO.

At least not without getting the head reco'd with valve inserts etc.

A straight gas Rover V8, might be a good choice though?

Borg Warner 35 Auto

An extremely cheap and easy combo.

Engineering power wise, is can't go over 40% increase in power/cubic capacity/weight, from memory.

Rover V8's are about 90hp from memory?

1.3L vs 3.5L... I dunno.

I'm not sure what the Escort engines are rated at?

I'm usually the first across the lights in an au wag on gas in economy mode without effort.. What's the point?

My cars are work vehicles mostly, need to get the job done when I put the foot down. If they have a bit of heart and soul that works too.

I'll say this once for everyone AUTOMATIC GEARBOX will be in ALL my cars. I'll clear this up as well.. I restore cars for customers, I don't actually care about future resale, originality or any of the history unless it pertains to someone trying to hide dodgy work that might kill me. I'll build my cars for me, to suit me and what I do with them. Having said that, I do everything as if it could be factory work or can be easily undone if the next owner wishes.

That statement about engines and LPG is honestly a bit dopey.. What do you think 99% of ford sixes run on without faults? Generally speaking if it was made for unleaded, it won't have a problem running gas. (until the injection system dries out and pisses fuel everywhere when you try to use it after 3years of nothing)

Your memory is a bit fuzzy.. Rovers are rated at 150 although they wouldn't actually achieve it mostly.

My personal gripe with the engineering process is that NOBODY will give you an answer as to what the guy will charge to tick the damn boxes on the paperwork. What will it actually cost to get a v8 escort passed??? Nobody knows and if they do, they won't tell you.

While it looks alright, I read through that list of Q/A and all I saw was dollar signs getting larger and more numerous. What auto would bolt up to that in Rwd? Custom sump practically killed it though.
