Distilled and Demineralised Water

Recommended Posts

Ok, first topic for this new section of OzFalcon!...

So I've been researching the available options, for when I replace the coolant in my BF wagon.

Who else here, mixes their Coolant concentrate, with Demineralised or Distilled Water?

There are a few choices in Australia that I can find,

but most seem to be nothing more than a brand name, bottled elsewhere.

Unfortunately, most options don't display the critical info on the label, being -

. Total dissolved Solids in ppm - (Parts per Million)

. Conductivity in uS/cm - (micro/siemens per centimeter/meter)

. pH level - (potential Hydrogen acid/alkaline level)

Strangely, there seems to be no benefit in purchasing larger package quantities.

In fact, when comparing dollars per litre, the sweet spot seems to be 5L or 10L containers.

Anything above or below that point, and the value decreases.

In general, Automotive stores seem to ask alot more for Demineralised/Distilled water,

compared with Supermarkets, Hardware Stores or factory direct purchases.

Around $1/L, seems to be a fair price point for 5/10L quantities.

(up to $3/L in small sizes, and $2/L in larger sizes)

So far, I can find the following brands -

Penrite Demineralised Water 1/5/10/20L - available at Repco/Bursons

We've been told by the Penrite sales reps that in Tassie we don't need to use demineralised water with coolant because our tap water is rather soft compared to other places. Century still recommend it for their batteries though.

We have access to some pretty comprehensive info on the Penrite products, I'll have a look today and see if it provides any further info about their water if you'd like.

Been "harvesting" the house air-con water and putting it on the pot plants. They love and thrive on it it as opposed to tap water, which merely keeps them alive. It would stand to reason that collecting and using said water in the cooling system or in batteries would be the same as using distilled water. I collected 5 litres yesterday and it's only a room-sized unit. Ducted or large split systems would make tons more.

don't do that with an evaporative cooling system.. the bloke that installed My parents one said the water would be poison.. the air is cleaned of all the pollution in the process and gets dumped ever few hours apparently.

Nah it's one of those stand-alone ones with a duct to the outside via a window etc. It makes water, doesn't evaporate it. You have to catch and drain the water out periodically unlike a fixed system that is often set up to dump it to drain. If you think about it, it's basically rainwater created in your living room. Same process.... Moist air meets cold atmosphere, water condenses, there's your rain.

I wonder why they would say that?

Wouldn't said pollution, merely get trapped and build up, in the Celldek pads, on all four sides of the Cooling Unit?

What about those on tank water, with an Evap Cooler?

Dad was questioning why he ran the drain out and bypassed the guttering, because there was a water tank for the garden off the guttering.

that's how the topic came about.
