making good progress! sorry about that pic above in wrong thread lol
This is what i forgot to check when taking the engine apart ,how far down the hole the pistons are and im glad ol m8 didnt shave the block cause it must be so close to zero deck i guess by 1990s fords machining had gone high computerized compared to older blocks which could be up to 040 down the hole8b9b08b0f2945823ec2475fb2f94c6fd.jpg

I FOUND A NOS CAM ON E BAY,4TZ 6250 B i checked its spec and its a 480 lift with 224 @50 ,is a xr8 au camshaft,should be ok as not a monster cam.not bad for $250,looking at around $450 -550 for a crow or others.

That’s a Ford Racing/Motorsport grind, B303, it’s not a factory AU XR8 cam. Nothing from the Ford factory came with that much duration at 50. The factory ECU won’t like it, unless you run a carb or chip...

This no 3 main cap bolt has a threaded end for maybe a fox body sump pick up i guess i accidentally painted it thinking it was a head bolt also just waiting on the new roller cam ,chain is ready.

Slightly less duration at 50 but with more lift.
220@50
0.498 lift

A good street cam for a efi 302.

With no more parts to finish it off i just thought to see how much piston to valve clearance there is so i put the head on and wowned it over and even with 5 thou piston poking out of the bore there was heaps off room even without the headgasket on

I was watching you tube vids that say around 450hp the cast block starts to get stressed and crack in the lifter valkey and the mains area this one looks finefb51ee6304ec1a3d1ce9ec186c1872e0.jpgaabd53a65cae338aabd5a8dd14bfb856.jpg

Probably because that engine hasn't made 450hp in its life, in stock form if they are well maintained the will do many hundreds of thousands of ks before they have any mechanical failures

The cam came lets put it in last night ol m8 from comp cams said dont put any lube on thr lobes as it can jam the roller up but i guess some oil at least ?c28a82169c34b3f10e5f22348cac327f.jpg

Yeah the rule of thumb on a few 5.0 forums is the block we’re good for 500hp at the crank....but in saying that a Australian tuning place on Facebook get 550hp at the wheels with no issues out of the 302 block with boost...also depends on the tune and revs.

The other point was that they didn’t like high rpm, I take mine to 6500 a bit once to 7000 and no issues.

The later 351 roller blocks made in the 1990s split the cam tunnels really bad too.

Maybe it’s just luck of the draw with them.

Turns out that the 289 I scored is a 302, much disappointment.
