WINDSOR SMALLBLOCK TALK

Recommended Posts

If you are using the original cam then take the gear of the AU piece and put on another dizzy. Just make sure the shaft size is the same.

The steel gears use to be about $40, that was 10 years ago for me. I used Mallory steel gear and a Mallory dizzy and the roll pin had to be re drilled to suit.

Ok some progress the dizzy drive is a tiny bit bigger than 1/4 hex969da6644a7838d5353b2e833f35a001.jpgb9ba90cc5f8988c6f8db9cdb68b37faa.jpgdc93f39d92b0fdd858c06e2884e8fcd4.jpgbcfa48eea35608e9ddf46dd3eb707ed0.jpg

Just get another dizzy, then swap the gear over.

Might have to apply some heat to it. I’m sure we pressed the steel gear on to the dizzy for mine.

Lookin' good matey! You going to see how she runs just like that? I'd be pretty tempted so long as the carby's up to scratch, or swap out for a 2bbl 500 if you have one handy.

I’d be interested to see how that goes, it’s quite surprising how much carb these little things can take.

When I was shopping around for a carb for mine the consensus was the usual 600cfm vac sec, but it never really ran right. Thinking it was too big went down to a quick fuel 450 dp and it was better in the idle to mid range and then went flat.

Took a gamble on a new Quick fuel 650dp and basically straight out of the box it was mint.
Tuned it using the wide band afr and it starts easy, revs crisp as hell and has steady afr right up to 6500.

Exactly i scored it for 80 bux and 1 hour in tp cleaning is seeing 2 shit paint jobs but it has this nice oil sheild underneath and the 400 i just bought has 350 on it in gc anyway im assuming the mustang spacer wont be a direct fit to a 350 but it dont matter as the 400 2v intake should be a direct fit833bd718ac1e12f7c3274ce59c839496.jpg38191858615046274074e8a61b498442.jpgf84d367501287f31918b2948ae193158.jpg

After a few hrs of cleaning and 3 coats ford light blue it looks good note 1970 cast date code also the firing order on this manifold wont suit late model roller cam i think thom might no something about that 79d67b5eff4708c07d42a504eca46e4a.jpg46bd979a236350ceb18b164ffb029cc7.jpg2f8ae89e9a01b70fde5f44f5fc814518.jpg7381d2954b04d806253468be2c97dbe8.jpg

Yeah don’t use that firing order.

Now this carby is not a knock off copy they actually sell them new for $120 i couldnt really see any make on it until i spotted this and even the spacer has 1970 cast into it so shes a genuine autolite7b994634122cffd1a8580b76f9d31db7.jpgd1885142dd1e5cd96b46e43e2050cddc.jpg7af52deb8091a89975dadf1963e3a8f1.jpg040f04b27d4455eead8e2bb022807339.jpg

Your roller cam firing order is the same as a Clevo or "Mustang", ie: 13726548. The earlier one was phased out in the 80s (for some reason they kept it until then) but all other Ford smallblocks (351W/351C/400/4.6/5.4 Modular) use the later one. Beats the fuck out of me, but reasons I guess.

That Motorcraft carby would be a better one to use than a 350. They are near bulletproof, and have annular boosters vs standard ones in the Holley. Probably rated at a similar CFM anyway.

The only "knockoff" of them was the Holley 2010 and 4010 series, which were an evolution of this design. The Summit brand carby is the latest rehash, still selling well for price and out-of-the-box running. I wouldn't baulk at using one. I had a 600 Vac 4010 and it was pretty good. Just that the aluminium body would act like a pot on a stove. Hot days were a shit.

Nice one mate, an original carb would be worth running on it even just for simplicity sake. I wouldn't use a 350 Holley as they are really only a 250cfm job by 4bbl rating standards, and the 500 is a 375cfm by that measure. Check for yourself and you'll see the 500 has the same venturi diameter as a 750cfm 4bbl.

I've used 350's on Ford 250's and Chrysler 245's and they don't work too well there, needing substantial rejetting and tweaking. If you can get a 500 go for that, otherwise a 4bbl with an adaptor would be better than a Holley 350.

As for firing order I believe there was a concern that the frontmost cam bearing was copping too much of a flogging, what with the chain and firing order and all. So they changed it to the 351 order with the next major redesign and that was that.

Next decision is i have a set of felpro 289 302 intake gaskets that fit perfect on the manifold but dont line up perfect with the efi heads i ordered a set of efi ones already so which one should i use the smaller old style or newer ones ? Or it ain't gunna matter really f948d138c42b516b31dca088fc5cc241.jpg4faa752ffc5a61ff8809496dd01b2a05.jpg

I'd go the ones in the top picture, the ones that clear the ports a bit all around, looks like they fit better especially around the coolant passage. I haven't dealt with wet manifolds before but presume you want a pretty good seal there to save leaks and stuffing around later.

Ah, right you are. Probably won't matter to much in that case. If you're super anal about it you could trim them but if the main overlap is in the head to manifold water passage you should be fine from both a leak and performance point of view.

Mind you if you've got the correct ones coming in I'd wait for them. Hell, you paid for them right? Unless you want to do an intake swap in the future, then use the current ones and stash the proper set.

thats how i ended up with the 289 ones ,in the complete felpro efi late gaskit kit they have 2 sets of intake gaskets fkd if i know why ?? oil seal too,and some other crap.
