CLEVELAND ENGINE TALK

well yes they clear strokers but the mains on a 400 are 3 inch compard to 2.75 on a 351c but dont all 335 series engines share the same bolt pattern on the mains ,perhaps the main caps are just widend a bit on a 400 but bolt up the same space as a 351c ?

Clevos have 2.75" journals, 400M and 351W have 3". I think the bolt spacings on the main caps are the same. There's only 0.125" difference in distance from the tunnel bore to the main caps bolt hole each side.

i had another idea late last night ,put a 351m piston on a 302c rod ,a 351m piston is taller than a 400,but i did some quick math and it dont look like its gunna be a cheap way out a bumping up the comp, just a thought.

Gudgeon pins are different between Clevos and Ms, so the piston would need to be bushed down. So, even more expense on top of the piston price... Thanks Ford for changing sht that should have all been the same

yes the pin job is 8 bushings, but the comp height is 1.645 and the 400 is 1.630 on most aftermarket flatops and no big dish in the middle,or kieth black pop up from summitt.you see im using the big open chamber heads,

In that case can you get a set with a gentle dome on them? I think the cheapest/easiest path is to use the right pistons, even if they have to be custom, instead of trying to use ones for something else and having to do a whole bunch of work-arounds to make them fit

Just on to pulling apart the heads and i might be in some luck just a tiny clean and these heads have been pulled apart before someone cleaned the valves and the rubber oil drippers were still soft ,also looks like some portwork as welldd17d88ef4c4baad458ca42451516931.jpg9cc5f439bcb1cd2001019ec67e8c9bcc.jpga9942bae7b3752bf5d68046bbb098047.jpg88c1c29d0e54435840b7a02e4cec3b52.jpg

yeah strange and 1972 cast date ? we didnt cast our own clevos till around this date with the xa era didnt we ?
I can't find any decent info on when we stopped importing blocks and started making them here. I know any 302C had at least Aussie heads from the start as they're all closed 2Vs.

But any part number starting with "AR" is Aussie as it stands for "Australian Revision", then the US part number on which it was based comes after that.

I don't think Ford would've liked to assemble engines locally that they're not familiar with just to put their own heads in them, and a very small number too. Not even sure if Ford Oz even imported them or if they just came here in various US import cars.

I think all 400s that made it here would have come as complete engines, and those heads you have were likely fitted at a later date... Don't forget, there's nearly 50 years for that to have happened throughout the engines life now.

Arr yeah i forgot i dropped the block off at the machine shop and the crank needs a mill to 020 also the block needs 1 sleeve as i found a hole in the bore but seems to be from casting not piston or rust in the jacket but for $200 he can sleve the m/f

the guy i bought the engine off said the 400 came out of a f truck so i would say a new set of heads was done to suit unleaded or gas as someone has rebuilt them before and the valves did not look that old and definatly not the original ford valves,if so the chambers will be a tad smaller not much tho just a few cc.

Well that's a plus, hopefully the guides are still fresh. Good thing that the factory valves are gone, they have the occasional tendency to pop their heads off with any sort of valve spring upgrades and rpm. With any luck, you scored better valvesprings too but if not, now's the time to upgrade. Factory ones are poo. Mine used to float above 5k rpm with only the baby cam.

I got lucky with mine, valves came up good and the heads already had hardened seats put in and k-lines in the guides.
