who ever pulled it apart many moons ago put thick grease on the bores and cyl head chambers ,the motor has definatly been rebuilt before,im hoping the heads got a bit of a rebuild as well ,i also found a little bit of lip on the bore ,the further i get into this 400 im not feeling to throw massive money at it,probly just a re builder ,im finding quite a few of these now,and when the right one comes along then do it up big,he said it came out of a f truck and it probvly did in its 2nd life as there is a pilot bearing in the crank for a manual, original was in the galaxie.

i broke one of the pistons today trying to free up a pin on the rod,all the rest were fine ,so no choice now its gunna need new pistons ,once olm8 measures it up after tanking we will see if it needs a rebore or maybe we can get out of it with just a ridgecut if anything and keep std bore size as i dont wanna get into to deep in this one,std cheap replacement pistons with the big dish will keep it in 8 to 1 region or so ,fine for a std rebuilder.

In that case, you could bump the compression up a bit of you have a set of 302 heads available.

weiand also made one for the 400 in single plane but very few were ever made ,just a couple of years and another 400 holy grail part.
Ok i have cleaned and oiled up some parts n bolts plus pushrods and block is ready for the machine shop i hope its good news ,also note hammer on table that is the only tool needed to fix a 400 also need to bring that manifold up to scratch by wet or some type of blasting and also the crank ,note load spreader ,would this be used on a manual as well as a flexplate ?41ba32e3336b4ae811c5382d1c2382e9.jpg0a20bd577bd995094553f27af2435547.jpg08f8354ff4934f3b0021c7f453013516.jpg772d1656b73a34daf6480704a2c037e8.jpg

I only got that kit because I have a Karcher already. It does a pretty good job and makes a lot less mess and noise than air blasting, and the fine sand particles once they've impacted the job are captive in the water as opposed to floating around in the air and screwing people's lungs.

what about just using my sand blaster its only a small kit,i have left over used fine garnet from the xd build.
Sure that would work, it won't make it shiny though. It will give a dull, "as cast" finish.

Hey Chestnut, try this Ali cleaner, it's a phosphoric acid.

Brings up cast Ali like brand new.

Use a spray bottle, and spray it on neat or 50/50 with water.

But remember to add the acid to the water if you mix it, not the other way around or it will splatter and burn you.

Ali gearbox from this......

To this.....

Notice it worked best on the cast extension housing.

I spray it on, let it sit for 10-15 minutes then spray again and scrub with a brush.

Wash off with water.

Will come up like new.

I'm guessing no unless they're made to also fit stroker cranks.
