Doing a lot of research on the 429 cj/scj and they are a very rare engine these days ,as prices for these original factory parts are crazy even in the USA,heads are near non existence to buy I guess that's why so many just build a 460 with spruced up 460 heads so I had another look at my 73 heads and turns out they are the last of the decent ones to play with at 91 cc chamber anything after these are 97cc and if you can find early castings they have even smaller 70 odd cc size these are starting to look good my new valves should lob up next week.b60cff707c73973a309b34b211294812.jpg164df262ca0cd850fb442583e395009b.jpg6b334d70ee73d3bce4063725e5d9f36d.jpg

also i read last night that my sump needs a police/cobra jet oil pump and pick up,as a std one has the wrong angle to fit, there is about 10 million different pumps and pick ups for the big block ,sumps as well.
My new std valve set came and cam bearings and plug set.yep the valves fit but the inserts are borderline and should be ok for a stocker,I will get the machine shop just to have a quick look at them before final assembly like maybe he can put some new guides in there or something acc7f96321dc647430d84f933f2c57ab.jpgb718062ca3c722d0e62a2c232cb70317.jpg65454dd64e6bfba84882c2639e5bbf4b.jpg

In that photo of the pedestals, the one on the left doesn't look happy, like the head was dropped and landed on that. Is it still ok?

I would do the valve guides, if they're sloppy they'll flog the seats out and also cause oil consumption. For the little extra, it's worth doing right.

Hey why does there seem to be a bit more tiny gap on the locks ? Or is that the way single valve locks are ? I'm using std clevo spring and retainer as I thought the 460 uses the same ? For std factory set upd3d7e1dcadfdf8a6d45ce5597e7a7c22.jpg3db16a0fc431055a91cf973e7b58b365.jpg

Did a quick check with no spring and no retainer but still the same, they seem to fit up normal to the head just that gap or maybe need a retainer to suit those locks ?2780920b0a36bf87dfdd7533ca4da0c3.jpg8353d1321e8bb89aba14ca5e620430f2.jpgb8477aed98e31b266e9125f6c2d2b502.jpg86a492fe3365c6aa92d23984090307fd.jpg1e64ffa6fcb0bf794989822268be2440.jpg

you mean the valve stem or seats ? as it was they are untouched from new he reckons and still ok to use there is very little if any wobble from side to side, but the seats just needed a spruce up,being a 1973 or 74 engine its possible this is a unleaded engine ,i think they started using or introduced it in 1971 ?.

Sorry I meant seats. I was lucky when I got mine done up, someone had done inserts before. Guides needed doing though.

I can still see some putting on those seats, I hope your head guy is confident that they'll lap in like that

They are a lot better than what they were,he used a round stone cutting type thing with a 11/32 fitting that slides into head where the valve goes ,or pay $600 to set it up on the valve seat cutting machine arr no thanks this will be fine for a stock engine

Looks pretty good to me and he just called to say the block is ready to pick up after hot tank and rust dip and the crank is ready too0b6f95aac089c8a9fb874f6a2e0adfc9.jpg12e84f33b96df3f78928b97a598f731d.jpg50fde83ebdb884f7f7d38485cfdfd924.jpg94fc85bd727d721c04475010654cd072.jpgcf06c133ecefe637afed9cadfed86b00.jpge381af42b6de2f7427513a298768e8e2.jpg
