yes i had just moved up here from sydney ,and was out of doing cars up,then i hear on the radio redcliffe dyno home of the worlds fastest clevo street car,and i thought yeah right, but at the time it was true,im glad i made the move up here some 20 years ago,i lived on the sunshine coast, brisbane ,and now the gold coast, but tbh the st machine sceene up here was a bit light compard to sydney back in the day, melbs also, now its all hoons with AU falcons.

The new oil thing fits nice and this is what olm8 at the machine shop was getting a bone from see how you can't even get a steel ruler between the bores it's like the first are fused together and they are all the same ,might be a bit hard to see though with only mild corosion on a 50 year old block80efdc68d059147da65937d64a78e8cd.jpg1dbcea42afcd7834b35d5132717e12fd.jpgec5372a272778cbcbf21932c4f18dc52.jpgf6587e7ac58f7e73dd4cabb488cf07d0.jpg

I pulled out my last 400 block and it's the high nickel D1AE block STD bore I'm having trouble finding 020 pistons as STD 30 40 and 60 are the most common I just wanted to keep as much meat on the bores as possible but since covid a lot of industry has closed or slowed right down in production. 2c772091bb455cdce0f103ffe103f65c.jpg7159d758fbc3716600f8618a9c909fae.jpg7072c79c440571fcc2098b16518eaf26.jpg6571ba5114632bc44daef775ca5ea977.jpg6a80af82c73e0b3914229e30bffee8f9.jpg74577bb16702650a2159e741ac934d33.jpg

So what's the game plan with this big old lump? What's your intended use and target horsepower?

i have 2v c/c heads ready to use, eddy alloy intake, crank is done, just need pistons and internals, plan is to put it in my next wheels but finding something is getting hard,i will pay up to 5k for a xe sedan as long as the body is ok,have c4 bell suit big block, would love to do another chestnut sedan up even if i have to paint it ,t bar auto ,no power steer,no air,and leave the diff std ratio i have had enough of playing diffs, just a family cruiser i suppose.

If using closed chambers, it will have massive compression (especially if going with zero deck pistons) so it will need a big cam to bleed off that compression at low to mid revs. If going with std down-the-hole pistons, that of course will drop the comp but it will then act like an open chamber, and won't make power as efficiently or take as much timing.

Yes I went thru that with the first 400 that went in the Ute 26 deg it liked Max and 240 hp at the wheels my crossy had 214 on a mild tune ,only thing I can do is go opens and use the forged flat tops with zero deck but they are $1000 landed

heaps of times 302 closed chamber heads have been relieved to drop compression ratio, most modern head shops with a CNC program probably have a click an walk away program to do it.

only problem is dean the factory style pistons are down the hole 70thou,the aftermarket ones come in 3cc 7.5cc and 13cc so a fair bit of choice there, using open chamber heads ,lowest comp with the -13cc will be 10.5.1,then 12.1 and 14.1 ,these pistons were made with using the open chamber heads in mind.

or comp ratios with the open chamber heads is 9.75 with 13cc,10.25 with 7.5cc or 10.7 with 3cc pistons.i just had a look at these pistons again and they have gone up in price again, probly cause they only made 1 big lot and now are down on stock in the usa, might have to wait until a surplus happends and then buy em at a decent price or just go for the stock pistons as my car will not be a race car.

But you have the gun block that will handle some herbs so why not build some into it? If I had my time over, I would have waited a few more paychecks and got a roller cam and zero deck pistons, and it would have been the engine I now wish I had.
