V8 power steering pressure line

Recommended Posts

Just got a delivery thrown at my doorstep, Mackay power steer pump to box hose/pipe and the fitment is pretty piss-poor.

I worked out that it goes from the box, over and down past the starter motor, down the back of the crossmember and kicks forward under the engine mount to where the pump sits on the L/H cyl head.

Problems:

1) much easier with drag link or engine removed. It's like Ford started with a power steer line and built a car around it.

2) I can see clearance issues with the headers on the R/H bank (see photo)

3) they've bloody crimped the pump elbow fitting 90 deg out of whack, and twisting the flexible hose part to line up with the pump isn't very easy (or ideal)..... Also see photo

Anyone else had dramas like this?8ad87a1967bd0a3dba6934c896b020ba.jpg74a7647dbed92f00bff1dbd4c4287fbd.jpg

Yep,  this ^ ^ ^ ^

That fitting is so wrong.!  As you said, not a good idea to twist the hose that far.  A lot of the inaccurate bends come from the fact that they are kicked around, and stored poorly at the local Auto shop, then kicked around and stepped on by Australia Post. But, yours seems 90* out.

is that for the plastic housing pump ? there's another 90degree fitting available for that that can go into a saginaw(XF onwards pump) if someone knows what they are on about..

i've had to bend those pipes at the box end before using a jack handle or other lump of adjusting wood etc.

Nah metal case Saginaw pump, so that's the hose I ordered. I somehow ended up with a V8 bracket/pump that possibly came off a ZK Fairlane or something (too long ago now)

I think XD models onwards had this setup. The pump fitting is a GM-specific metric fitting: a 16mm o-ring nut with a swaged end (it's not a flare!) so the line goes from that to 11/16"SAE flare at the steering box end.

I could possibly cut the tube and sweat some -8 JIC tubeweld male/female fittings on, allowing rotation to wherever I want it. But I'd have to pull the stupid thing out again

Just disappointing after umm-ing and ahhh-ing for ages over how to make up my own hose and route it where I wanted it, to just saying "fuck it, get the right one already made up", and now here we are with this crap.

You could get a swagelok or similar joiner so you can cut and rotate the tube.

Never used them before. What pressure are they normally good for?

I'm not sure what size tube the lines are so here's a chartf8eef09b14411eb203160eeaa1c0c301.jpg

It looks like about 5/16 ID and guessing wall thickness to be about 0.060", so I'd shit it in. Ford runs about 1400psi standard and I'll be dropping it to about 1000 with the pump pressure mod.

Cheers for that anyway

Pretty sure you are right, sure looks like the plastic pump type

OK now I get what you're saying Dean. After reading a bit, I can see that you're referring to the Thompson (TRW) pump. I can't find much info but from what I can gather, either this or the Saginaw pump could have been used throughout production on V8 or 6, from XW to EL (according to this site:

https://www.ultimatepowersteering.com.au/ford-falcon-xw-to-xy-xa-to-el-original-ford-power-steering-pump-assembly/

Looking at the pic, the pressure outlet sits sideways, which explains why the hose end is sideways too. When I ordered the hose, there was nothing to differentiate the two. I think you're just supposed to bodge it up.

At first it seems odd that Ford would source two different designs simultaneously but they did that with brakes too, as in the manuals it just says "PBR or Girlock", with no explanation of what part goes into which model, year, spec, whatever. I can only gather that they did this to guarantee supply in case of a shortage, etc.

Can you just get a 90* elbow from Pirtek/Enzed and screw it into the back of the pump.?

Being a specialised power steer fitting, I doubt it Bear. I tried a while ago buying an adaptor to -8 JIC nipple, the Pirtek bloke had no bloody idea and wasn't really interested. You can get those ones easily from the US but they cost too much to get here for what they are.

As for the 16mm Saginaw fitting, haven't seen one yet. I might just price a swage-lock and go from there.

there is one available, (or was available) that fit's like it's meant to.
i'd assume a power steering MOB would know what one is

That is the adaptor . Sorry about size of the pic, I had to reduce it down enough to post. Could email the bigger pic if you need.

The swagelock fittings are good but I don't think the wall thickness of that tube is enough to support a good high pressure joint.

We use all swagelock fittings with natural gas @ 3000psi but the tubing is all thick wall stainless

Wow serious? I didn't know that about swage-loks. I'm currently trying to configure a good spot for the pump as the factory brackets put it way over in front of the shock tower. It seriously hits the MSD box I have mounted there.

As soon as I get the pump in a less ridiculous spot, I'll see how easily the fitting reaches the port. If I do end up needing one, I'll PM you for more info. Cheers!

Cheers mate I'll definitely let you know.

Braided an6 PTFE should take 4000 psi. And all the speedflow fittings or in other words j i c fittings will support that pressure no worries. and you can Ally hard line and bend up your own you will just need a 37 degree flare tool. save yourself mucho dollar Reno.

What I'm saying is. You have the option where you could cut the flexible portion of your line Flair it in 37 degree jic and adapt PTFE braided line to the back of the pump. Might end up cheaper than buying one or two swagelok fittings.
