Ford "Cobra" air cleaner mod

12 posts in this topic

I've had this thing for a while, and i think it looks really cool. Not a fan of the "dunny seat" stocker air cleaners. I painted it up along with the rocker covers to sort of mimic the colour scheme of the 2-bbl Aussie clevos from the 70s.

Trouble is, the replacement element is really hard to get and expensive (over $100 landed), not good for a consumable item.

So i tracked down the closest size available, turns out to be one from a Mercedes 2.6 6-cyl. Less than 30 bucks to my door, German made Mann Filter. Only trouble is, it's a floppy type that's designed to go in an air cleaner with little ribs all round that hold it in place.

So i have to make up a frame that supports it in the right position inside the filter and allows it to seal.

The beauty of the element being floppy is that you can apply this procedure to any custom air cleaner, and make a frame of any shape you like and simply stretch it over, it will hold itself in place. You just need to seal top and bottom.

With one of them sticking out of the bonnet, I'll fit right in here in western Sydney (home of ghetto car mods)

In saying that, this reverse cowl trend is getting ridiculous! Did Holden recall all v6 ve commodores in western Sydney to have one fitted??
Some are so tall I could hide under them...
Only if you have absolutely no reason to have one, and also the Chev badge comes at no extra charge.

There is a smaller one that fits the 190 2.3 engine, might be a good one for all those 6 banger fans.
