Engine conversion help and information needed soon as possible

Recommended Posts

Hi

Thinking of a v8 into the ef 4.0 if parts can be had for right price and wondered which options best

1. Use the au v8 ecu which has the transmission computer built in and you may be able to strip the ecu wires out the engine bay harness and graft it into the ef 4.0 engine bay harness after taking out the original wires. Then you may not have to swap the dash harness and you keep the ef abs, and because th transmission ecu wires are there where in the au it's built in.

If you use the au ecu with the v8 engine will it bring it to 175kw as that is what the std au v8 originally had or still stay at 165-169kw like ef el, thinkin of au v8 ecu as the auto and engine ecu is one and you probably won't need to swap dash harness as the transmission wires are with the engine ecu, and being a fairmont it'd be hard to get a v8 ef fairmont dash harness and it's more work to swap the dash harness as well, where if you got the au v8 ecu wires grafted them in a spare ef 4.0 engine harness after taking the original ecu wires out, it wouldn't be as much work on the big day most would be into putting the harness together.

Also reason for thinking of au block maybe too is because engine belt parts are a lot cheaper to buy than for e series

2. Use a e series v8 ecu and engine bay harness but transmission harness and ecu I s not built in to engine ecu, one way around it might be get the fairmont v8 engine bay harness and a base model v8 dash harness to strip auto wires or a 4.0 fairmont engine harness and a base model v8 engine and dash harness and graft the ecu and auto wires in and have the tcu plugs with the engine ecu plug then the dash harness at not need swapping,

3. Another option is a au xr6 hp engine with cam, what cam would you use and how would you get it as close as possible to the windsor engine sound

4. could you use a au v8 block with the ef/el xr8 ecu, how many kw was the standard au v8 (not te/ts50 or 220kw)

where would you get the tcu and harness for v8 auto

Is a hydraulic shop able to make custom aircon lines and ifso what would you have to do and ask and bring, same goes for steering hoses

Hope you's are able to read above to be able to help

Thanks

Easiest way would be used a ef 5.0 ecu and trans controller making an au ecu talk to the e series dash is a hell of a lot of work you'd be best off sourcing a cheap v8 Fairlane and use everything from that it would be cheaper than sourcing everything individually and you can still ring them for less than a grand, you can use an au engine with e series ecu and loom (my 5.0 wagon has this setup) the extra power in Au engines came from better heads and intake manifold than e series using an au ecu on a e series engine will not increase power on a standard engine so it's a hell of a lot of work for no return if you look around you may stumble across a factory v8 car for less money than it would take to turn a 6 cylinder car into a v8 car, unless you have a particular attachment to the car you already have

If you sell yours people might not let you buy another same and also particular ones had a lot already done, will probably stay with the 6 but thinking of it if the hard to get parts can be had for right price.

reason for thinking of au ecu in e series with v8 is because the au ecus and harness seem easier to get and cheaper

is there a reason you couldn't get any model ef v8 engine bay harness and also a 4.0 ef fairmont engine bay harness and graft the engine ecu and auto tcu wires into the 4.0 and retape it so you don't have to change dash harness because you could run the tcu wires same way as ecu and mount the tcu in behind the dash near glove box or run the tcu plug through the ecu plug spot far enough to run to original tcu spot alongside dash harness

Reason for wondering about the au v8 ecu making more power possibly the engine too is because the ef can only have upto 169kw/170kw without engineer and think the au engine have 175std or something and also the engine because au v8 engine parts are a lot cheaper to buy

is putting the std au 302 in a ef/el ok without engineer in sa as they also came out in a 302 std or as a option. Have heard there's about 5-10kw difference is there a way you can get the au v8 engine and ecu to 169kw if it's more

will the v8 au ac and power steering pump and alternator and water pump fit on e series v8 engine

if you put the e series v8 in using au v8 ecu so you can have tcu built in and coil pack will it just be what the e series originally had

what is the borgwarner tcu like those ones used in the ea-eb1 and e series v8 they ok and are they all same in tcu and wires and what model would be easiest to get the tcu wires and the tcu itself

Modifying a 6 cylinder loom to become a v8 loom is harder than swapping them, if you have the v8 looms you can have them installed in an afternoon whereas to turn a 6 cylinder loom into a v8 loom would take weeks if you know what you are doing, use an au engine with the e series ecu don't complicate your life by trying to use an au ecu I was involved in putting au running gear with the au loom and ecu into an ed and grafted the au looms into the ed looms and trying to get it all to work took weeks and it was a complete nightmare, the au front drive stuff will bolt straight on an e series 5.0 but you will also need an au timing cover to do it and you can't run ac using the au stuff as the aircon pump hits the chassis rail (in ed it does, pretty sure it would in ef/el)

Ok will a ef ac pump bolt to a au 5.0 engine

Will the au 5.0 power steer pump and alt bolt to a e series 5.0 engine and will they work with the ef or au water pump and ef ac pump

if you don't want to swap the dash harness could you join the tcu plug straight to engine bay harness and have enough wire to run through where ecu plug is and run along old 4.0 dash harness to the original tcu spot

apart from the tcu wires what's different in the 4.0 & v8 dash harness both fairmont, there's heaps low spec v8 ones but fairmont seems hard to get

if you want a nice fusible link box with a cover like in the later models that have all relays and stuff in one spot for horn headlights starter those things, what would you's do, have a au fusible link box to put in

Also could you use heavy duty circuit breakers instead of fusible links are they same as one another at protecting,

people have used them to protect high loads (anderson plugs, dual battery, sometimes upgraded alt) so will a heavy duty circuit breaker protect like a plugin fuseible link if you decided not to fit the au fusebox and instead got 4 ef thermo fan blocks with covers and made your own block out of them

And can you put the e series 5.0 distributor on au 5.0 block and what do you do with the egr can you put the au throttle body on bypass the egr with something and just connect the water lines together

You can't interchange pieces of the front drive you need the balancer, timing cover, water pump, power steer, ac pump and brackets all have to match using the au setup makes the engine nearly an inch shorter, AFAIK the dash harnesses are the same the tcu wiring is an add on that taps into the engine bay ecu and trans loom it would be easier to use a few ef thermo fan block than to use an au fuse box

The distributor goes straight in you are better off using an au intake and heads if you are starting with an au engine you will have to drill and tap a hole in the lower half of the intake manifold for the e series air intake sensor, you can block off the egr but it will need to be working for rego

ok so au steering pump, au ac pump, au alt, au water pump, au balancer, and with the egr how hard are they to buy if they need replacing and what about the bit where the water lines go itd be pretty hard to get a good one for a e series now

so could you put a au throttle body on or even the egr spacer and not bother with the egr, could you just find a way to sit it there make it look like its got one, only because youd be lucky to get a good non corroded spacer now and egr would be expensive

if you use a few ef fan relay blocks for the ef/el relays could they (even the ones normally under coolant tank) be mounted on drivers shock tower, cant see any reason why not so you dont have to take the coolant tank off to get to relays

where could you get replacement terminals to go in those ef/el fan relay bases

whatever way will probably run 6mm wire to starter solinoid and atleast 4 if not 5mm to headlights

for the alternator could a high current circuit breaker be used instead of fuse link which would give you chance to upgrade later if you want to

what about the fuse link boxes where would you get a new one from like those narva blocks you buy

what fuses and circuit breakers could you use in engine bay whats best

with egr how did you go with that if you put au intake in, if the el is 165kw will it still be 165kw if you use au intake, engine or both with a e series ecu

also do the e series v8 and ea/eb1 6cyl have same tcu wires and with the dash part of the tcu wires could you just take out the tcu wires and make a seperate harness and run it alongside the 6 cyl dash harness if theyre likely same apart from tcu wires

and the tcu wires do you have to get them off a e series v8 or could you get it out a ea/eb1 6 cyl and whats the tcu like at shifting gears they as good as the later ones that are inbuilt with the ecu

As far as the wiring goes just use factory looms an you won't have a problem you a better off sticking with e series front drive accessories otherwise you will have to get custom lines made up for everything, the au intake bypasses the egr, the egr plate isn't drilled to mount one the au intake and heads will give you the same power as a standard au no matter which ecu you use you will need a v8 tcu loom and tcu they drive like all the autos whether it's an external tcu or part of the ecu

what about the harness, do you have to swap the dash harness or can you pull out the tcu wires and run them alongside the 6 cyl dash harness

whats cost of the e series v8 power steer pump compared with au, how easy is it to get a good egr spacer off a e series v8 itd be pretty hard where au theres heaps

could you just put a au throttle body and egr spacer and not bother about the egr

thats what wouldve happened if space allowed and another thing is could you shift the lpg converter to clear the au coolant tank in e series and mount it like picture and just carefully bend the line without undoing it, could anyone do that long as they dont undo main copper line

the au coolant tank apparently fits the e series otherwise thinking of it just for the fusebox have relays in one area. or are you better with a few ef relay boxes and a couple ef fuse link boxes to make up

Shut the valve on the gas tank in the boot, crack the copper line (flared nut). Twist and retighten, not difficult.  Can check for leaks with a detergent/water mix, if you want.

PS: remember to turn on the gas tank, again.......

Will the au coolant tank hose reach radiator

is the spot in picture ok for lpg converter or should it be next to fuse box

if you have the converter next to coolant tank in picture how would you get engine out

Which would be better au fuse box or a few ef fan relay blocks with covers to have enough relays

how would you get the metal battery tray out

I don't have any more photos but this was when I rebuilt a 5.0 for my EL and I used au heads and intake on it4871a8eda18e8d661cd29568c3db4711.jpgaa90114c0f60efb93ff5a5c98953c3ff.jpg12abb0f49349e591c33ed3e20c783b67.jpg

hi

just need to ask some questions

1. with the behind dash harness on the firewall thats behind the dashboard secured to the firewall is it possible to swap the 6 cyl to the v8 one. and then will every plug plug into the 6 cyl harnesses (engine bay and ecu) the same as the 6 cyl one did. and will the v8 behind dash harness work like the 6 cyl one did once all plugged in if you decided to swap the 6 cyl behind the dash harness to save swapping it on the big day.

2. is the behind dash harness thats fixed to the firewall on inside exactly the same apart from the addition of the transmission controller plug,

3. if converting a ef or a el fairmont to a v8 does the behind dash harness on the firewall have to be from a fairmont or is that part the same between the gli/xr/fairmont.fairlane. and is it same between ef and el

4. is the v8 engine bay harnesses the same between fairmont/fairlane/xr/any with cruise control and is the v8 engine bay harness same between ef and el

5. will the el engine bay harness and the behind dash harness and dashboard harness plug into a ef body harness wether a 6 or v8

6. will a el body harness plug into the ef engine bay harness, and dash harness and behind dash harness until you swap them to el models

7. will the nl fairlane body harness plug into ef dash board, engine bay and behind dash harness with the extra wires for extra lights and door sensors just not being used until you connect them.

if anyone can help out with answers thatd be really good, might want to convert the ef fairmont to v8 if possible and want to do as much preperation work with the wiring harnesses as possible while still having everything working wether put the v8 behind dash harness in and just have the tcm plug sitting there or redo the body wiring, just little things like that that add time

thanks
