Sleeping with the fish's, barra turbo xe ute sleeper.

I've had this ute on the go on and off for about a year or so.

I picked it up off a guy in his thirties (yes 30's not 70's) in bendigo rather cheaply after he called to sell it to my wrecking yard.

He had just about every "mod" in the supercheap catalogue.

I couldn't leave the poor thing looking the way it did so I attacked it.

While it looked fat, the smokey, rattly oil burning 200 and crunchy 3 on the tree were never going to cut it, a plan was formulated.

So a few on here will be aware that I've successfully campaigned my wagon wagon in the last 2 street machine drag challenges in the dyo class.

So the thought with the ute was to build a car to take the reigns (at least for 2017) and run at drag challenge with a ford powered ford.
The only economical way for me to do that was to run a barra turbo.
The ute was stripped and the mocking up started.

Despite what you've read on facebook, a barra T will not fit an xseries with stock manifolds without cutting.
As the budget didn't allow for new manifolds we got to it with the grinder.

Next up was the cooler and pipework.

From the outset the ute had to be a sleeper, so an intercooler hanging through the bumper would never do.

It is also going to be engineered so minimal cutting is also a priority.

So the biggest intercooler that would fit was sourced from ebay (don't laugh) and the pipework was fabbed up

No cutting, and front bar is on.

painted black for the "big transmission cooler" look

Yeah it has been painted black now, I dont think I got a photo.
1 question... when does the wheelbarrow go back in? And are you planning to able to still close the bonnet after it's installed?

The bonnet will shut with the barra in it

I'm going use a btr in this so I retain the overdrive for drag challenge, and again to keep cost down.

Because this is a late xe ('84) it has the shorter crossmember which ment the rails needed s trim to get the btr in the tunnel, otherwise it fitted fine once we modified the original crossmember to s suit.

With everything pulled back out we set about filling the holes in the tower.

We also used a front tie bar from a ba as its going to use a stock ba radiator, fans and hoses to keep it all as simple as possible and to make it easy to get parts.

To get the bottom radiator hose the original tie bar needed a notch for clearance. 90843bc1a6b764102934598002e715ca.jpg

The engineer was happy as long as what was taken out was replaced properly, and I keep photos of all work.

I'm probably jumping the gun here but what are your plans for engine and the rest of the driveline?

Cool been waiting to see how this has been progressing. All looks like its not to difficult but you always tend to make this shit look less complicated than it actually is! I like the fact that its a budget build that is doable  with out spending a million dollars on aftermarket bits. Will be good  to see how fast you can go with such a basic setup. The weight reduction from porky Ba to less porky Xe should be a decent gain straight up.

After this I rebuilt the front end, painted it all and refitted it.
(Brakes will be changed this week)

Now it was back on its own feet for the first time in months.

At this stage I also changed the diff to a disc brake,28 spline 3.45 xg xr6 lsd, it appears I neglected to take photos of that arvo lol .

After giving the turbo the once over we found the turbine had hit the housing at some point, it was decided the best thing to do was get it reco'd.

Rather than straight out reco the ba spec turbo, I went for a gtx core,fg front housing, turbosmart gate and of course the flapper mod.
She should spool up nicely.

Patients grasshopper, the answers are coming.

Thanks bud.
I'm hoping to tip the scales @ around 1500kg (vs the ba-fg of 1850-2100).
And hoping for 4-450kw at the wheels for less than 10k total. Initially I wanted to do 10's for 5k, the turbo being stuffed farked that idea, on the plus side the turbo i've chosen has made nearly 500kw on e85 at low boost (12psi from memory) in a few fg turbos.
9's for $9k? Who knows until its going down the track in anger.
