Valley pan..yes or no?

I have a Weiand intake manifold and Holley 4 barrel carb set up on my 2V Cleveland 302..should I use a valley pan with it or not?

 

Have recently had the heads rebuilt and hardened valve seats put in and it didn't have one on there when I took the heads off.

 

Guy at the engine shop said he doesn't use one on his Mustang but was just wondering what opinions are versus yes or no for the valley pan?

If its just a stocker can use either,but more high performance engines usualy use just the gaskets.Factory cast iron manifolds love the tin valley .

I usually don't use them as I've rarely seen one that fits correctly plus it's just another place to leak from

They do it for a couple of reasons: one to stop oil vapour building up on the underside of the exhaust crossover and carbonising, another is to prevent combustion gases collecting there and rusting the iron manifold through into said exhaust crossover. Seeing as you're running an ally intake without a crossover, neither of these issues will occur. In saying that, some racers like to use valley pans as an extra barrier, a heat shield to the manifold to keep the mixture cooler.

Yep, this would be the only reason for me. Always ran my Clevo's without.

But, I'm not chasing a tenth of a second, either.....

I've use the Felpro pan kit a few times, seals up nicely,

after removing my AFD hi rise just fitted cork valley gaskets and ended up the rear slipped out leaking oil at heathcote

I wouldnt run one i never did on any of my engines

 

MAYBE id run one if i had a standard setup with crossovers

 

But ive always ran an aftermarket manifold with the crossover plugged
