Setting a rough start up timing on dizzy.

Recommended Posts

What ever you set it @ you can and I still do set timing on cam run in anyway. Too retarded and it will hurt the engine and run very hot to advanced and it can cause detonation issues.

Prime the oil pump and start it with rocker cover off and with a paint texta dot the backs of the pushrods so you can see if there spinning and if so slip the cover back on and do the rest of your check's and cam run in.

If you don't check pushrods are turning you can wipe a lobe all but straight away.

I used to set the timing on the balancer, remove coil lead from dizzy, plug it in to a spark plug and then turn on ignition. I then made sure the outside of the plug touched the engine and rotated the dizzy till I got a spark. I noted roughly the point of rotation that the spark occurred and set it there. This got me well into the ballpark but with electronic, it's hard to determine the exact trigger point that the pickup uses, unlike points which is either yes or no. I'd say with this method, you'll get within 5 degrees of correct timing. That's of course assuming you have the right cylinder firing.

Yeah just done that but used timming light and theres a mark on the dizzy where the trigger point seems to be . I think it will work. I'll just prime the oiling system again and try again.

Thanx for the replys

I always put the balancer on 30deg adv drop the dizzy in make sure its point straight at #1 post n it fires up 99% time worry bout timing after the rest of the checks.

Electronic distrib has a start and finish line on the black cover below rotor to help with install. Put the rotor on start and drop it in it will end up on the finish bolt er up n crank er.

If im running a cam in i normally hookup a set of jumperleads to a second batt to save muckin around with timing. Faster crank faster start. Helps with spark too.

yeah i got it on the right stroke i rotated it and watched the valves.

They dizzy wires might be up to shit tho. There's a pink/red and a black wire. pink one goes to coil negative right ? Black goes to coil positive. Seems wrong some how
