Panko 2,480 Posted October 4, 2018 15 hours ago, deankdx said: bargain of the century those seats! what is the original trim on the left seat like? (might be able to sell that trim(for RS owner to put genuine trim back on his) to cover cost of trimming them to suit the brown vinyl rear(maybe brown cloth center and leather sides? The Recaros arent from an Escort. Escorts ran Scheels. Is that what you meant about selling the trim? As for trimming them to suit my car. I figured cloth so it doesnt sweat. And im trying to save as much money as i can. 1 colour, 1 material haha. Ill probably recover 1, and purchase the same material to do the second one at some stage
Panko 2,480 Posted October 4, 2018 So going by just a photo, i had an upholsterer quote $400-$600 to recover the driver’s recaro, plus $150 for the Recaro to be stitched in, which they send off to be done
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 4, 2018 ahh, misread what seats were.. will wait for pics
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 4, 2018 time consuming job. i wonder if you can buy seat trims from recaro if they still make the same style?
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 4, 2018 the trimmer i used to use would have patched that with a similar grey material for $200 odd probably back in the day.. if you watch enough tutorials you could probably do it yourself. i'd run it with a seat cover and call it done.. (and be on the lookout for others that direct bolt in. )
Panko 2,480 Posted October 4, 2018 Yeah big job. But the way i look at it. A brand new pair of these seats is $2600. So $1300 each. Including a full recover, purchase and recaro stitching, in a similar colour to my interior, $850 each. Still a cheap recaro seat. 2 deankxf and bear351c reacted to this

deankxf 20,266 Posted October 4, 2018 probably way too hard anyway but there may be same left seats out there to buy one or a pair and swap the trims over or reskin off other seats from BMW or VW etc are these the same seat? the bases are probably way different to mount(VW are weird) but i wondered if the cloth could be swapped over for eg if they were same https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VW-Volkswagen-Polo-GTI-Recaro-Seats/292750709930?hash=item44294d54aa%3Ag%3AdcgAAOSwTWZblJFm&LH_ItemCondition=3000 1 Panko reacted to this

Mine are the LM model. Extremely common in 80s and early 90s cars as an aftermarket seat. Dont know of any cars with the LM factory fitted 1 deankxf reacted to this
Panko 2,480 Posted October 9, 2018 I had a good day today working on the RS wheels, or rather 1 in particular. I started work at 6am this morning, so had to be up at 430am, which meant i knocked off at 11am today. one of the 4 wasnt quite up to the standard the others were, so i decided to basically start over with it and sanded it back and machine polished it today. just a short video showing the difference between 1200 grit sand paper raw, and then polished with a firm and soft polishing cone in a power drill. https://i.imgur.com/ihwgWiP.mp4
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 9, 2018 is the bottom in video the polished part? i actually like the 1200 raw finish going by that(partly because it means i don't need to do polishing)
Panko 2,480 Posted October 9, 2018 when the wheel rotates, yes the you see the line. the shiny section at the bottom of the view is the polished section and the other is raw hand sanded 1 deankxf reacted to this
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 9, 2018 Cool. .both are nice. .Polish should go with the rest of the chrome though

If i had a linishing machine and could make it smooth and even id consider leaving the sanded/machined look. But the mahine polished look does it for me 1 deankxf reacted to this
Panko 2,480 Posted October 13, 2018 I had a really productive day on the escort front started out this morning with 2 of the wheels still needing final sand and polish, before being masked up for paint. I got the first one done then got called into work to fix up some issues. so they took an hour and a half out of my sunday second one done. now for masking take 2. the remaining 3 wheels masked up, and in primer. 3 coats of etch primer. while i was "waiting for paint to dry" i went and converted the bigger (32/36) carby from water choke to manual choke ready to go onto the car in the coming days. I knocked off about 6:30pm tonight, and by then I had all the painting done on the wheels we had the best painting weather in melbourne today, warm, and a nice breeze to flash dry the paint, which meant each coat was drying in under 5 minutes Tomorrow before i leave for work at midday, I will be spraying on the clear coat. so by tuesday morning, i can take the masking tape off and have my wheels finished at last. Tyres will be fitted sometime later this week, and by the weekend with any luck, the wheels will be on the car im so excited 1 deankxf reacted to this
deankxf 20,266 Posted October 13, 2018 looking forward to round and balanced wheels finally! definitely was good painting weather, i did some touching up on the diesel gemini. might post some pics on My wagon thread later. interested to see the difference with the 32/
Panko 2,480 Posted October 15, 2018 Wheels are finished! and booked in for tyres tomorrow morning (wednesday) They still arent 100%, but thankfully you cant pick it unless youre up close.. in a few spots, the clear coat went a little milky, which pissed me right off as compared to this... nice black shiny paint. thankfully it doesnt stand out. in the pic below, the bit that went milky is the spoke pointing upwards. so its hard to see unless youre up close 1 deankxf reacted to this

Panko 2,480 Posted October 15, 2018 Yep Im pretty keen to get them on This morning before going to work I was doing some more on the 32/36 weber to go on the car. I realised this morning that I have an issue with the throttle cable. With all the parts i got from a Mk2 1600GT, I got the correct, short length throttle cable, to suit the twin choke weber setup. HOWEVER, Mk1 and Mk2 throttle cables are different at the pedal end, and the way they adjust is also different. Which leads me to the throttle bracket that bolts to the back of the intake manifold, which is unique to the weber setup. Because it came from a Mk2, to suit the Mk2 style adjuster, the cable and bracket are specific to each other. Basically what I need is a mk1 inner cable, and a Mk2 out case lol. OR, a Mk1 RS2000 cable would work, but hard to get here in Australia, for obvious reasons. then to make sure there is good surface area for the Mk1 cable to adjust on, on the bracket, id just have to use big washers. the hole for the mk2 adjuster is a square, about 15mm x 15mm Hard to explain without pics, but ill get some later. I pulled this out of my box of parts just to see what needed to be done with this to make it work. again this is a genuine GT air cleaner hat. obviously needs resto, then need to work out 100% how it mounts etc etc. Its missing the snorkel also the plan is to restore this, and set it up and it duct it down to the front of the car during the hotter months, then during winter, remove it and go back to the ram flow air filter that im running now. 2 bear351c and deankxf reacted to this
