time for new hoses throughout .. i've cooked 2 engines due to hose issues in the last 25yrs.. and a mate of mine has done the same, but they were a magna and a pintara so it didn't matter.

yeah. these must be jsut really worn out and perished. i poked it with a screwdriver and the screwdriver went right through the rubber with little force. so yeah they are fooked

so i fitted new heater hoses a couple days ago. it was great to have the car running again for the first time in 3 weeks :D and driving. the new hoses went on without issue.

I finally had enough of the slow cranking, and it was time to replace my battery. So I did that today. Pulled the old batter out, and found some rust in the battery tray. very very common, but nothing major in my car, just 1 small hole. So i set about fixing that up.

I did a pretty shit house job of it, very rushed, but going with the rest of the engine bay its not a big deal. when I (one day) get the engine bay painted Ill be more careful of my workmanship under the bonnet then :P

Before...

My little box I put in to prevent overspray lol

and I forgot to take pics of the finished product haha. Just painted it in matte black, then stuck the new battery on top once the paint and dried off.

the car now cranks way way faster, but still was a right pig to start this afternoon, it seemed to have flooded big time.

on that note about flooding, I am picking up my correct GT intake setup tomorrow, carby, air cleaner hat, throttle bracket and cable, plus another twin choke intake manifold, which is already sold pending payment :)

does it fit a falcon battery in it or only the skinny 4cyl types

i only have the option of 1 battery without modifying stuff.

When I was at the battery place getting the new battery, i was looking at an AGM, completely sealed battery, which was about 650cca (double what the stock battery is) that is designed to be mounted in any orientation safely. I was looking at potentially putting it on the car on its side, with the terminals facing the engine, so all the cabling would be on the on the now side of the battery, and the top was just a black steel frame. but I wouldve had to custom make a battery clamp, and decided if i was going to go to that extreme id just boot mount the battery in a box.

the maximum dimensions i can go is 320mm long, by 140mm wide, but anything remotely close to that is too tall, and at 320mm long, and 140mm wide, im less than 2" from the headers at the back corner of the battery.

How about 2 dry cell motorcycle batteries, linked together??  Small but, still got good CCA.

well with today's battery technology, an alternative was basically a 12v motorbike battery, size wise that would be enough to run the car, like i couldve hidden it inside the car somewhere it was so small, but it came down the CBFed factor of custom making a clamp, or wiring to make it work

a little from column A, a little from column B.

ideally i would like to boot mount the battery, in a box, but then id have the massive battery tray there for no reason, and i definitely do not want to remove that, even though it does have a tiny rust hole.

at the end of the day, I was already drawing up an idea in my head for the custom battery clamp while i was standing there looking at alternatives. it wouldnt have been hard to do, but i wanted to be able to go home there and then, drop the battery in and fire it up. i didnt want to have to spend hours making something.

Ive had a little bit of inspiration from the Mighty Car Mods guys.

Anyone who follows them, and is up to date with their work, wouldve seen Marty's wheels for the Mira being restored, and they look fan-bloody-tastic! with the weather being decent the next few days, and while i have a few days off work, I am going to pull my finger out and finish the resto job on the RS wheels for the escort. I am really keen to have them on the car now. so 3 of them still need painting on the front, and all 4 need painting in the back of the rim, and then a final machine polish on all of them.

while I am at it, I will be getting what I can done, that needs painting for the XF as well, like the roof rail slats that bolt to the roof, and any other little bits I have ready to paint :D:D:D

back at it again. 1 down, 3 to go. yep i need to mask off the one ive already painted again, because I didnt have any clear coat at the time, so i need to spray some clear on, and still paint the back of the wheels.

good to see you are getting into them again..
i spoke to the carby bloke i used.. he said to check your linkages will work on that new carby will work in the car and he can rebuild it for $350 ish depending what's wrong with it.

he showed me on the weber book he has that even a 32/36 weber is suited to as small as a 1200 engine if the ports in the head are individual(not siamese  like mini or holden etc)

when i went to ask about My 32/36 carby i am using on the gemini., he said if it needs reco, it's better value to buy new (with a choke that mine was missing). but turns out it was fine, and My dyno tune ended up the same price as a new carby and no tuning...(much better after the dyno tune)

I got stuck into the wheels today. Basically battled with the wind all day, and then started losing the sunlight which I was using to dry the coats of paint.

So i got all the base colour done today, matte black on the back and gloss on the front. Tomorrow I will clear the front side. If only the days were a little longer :P (bring on summer, sick of this cold weather)

backs all done

hEQdniE.jpg

front all done. yep only 3 being painted on the front today because remember I had already done one a few weeks ago, but i do need to clear coat that, so it is also masked off waiting its clear coat.

The final step will be to do a final machine polish on the alloy before they go and get tyres fitted. once thats done, thats the last major, priority job, on the Escort for a while, and I can try focus on the wagon.

Wheels make a car, and these are gonna look sick on the escort.

On on the mcm front, that episode made me contact barrel bros about my modenas. Hopefully some, progress soon on that front.

I dam hope they look the goods haha 😂

like i said in an earlier post, if i decide not, i will move these on and buy a new set of 13x6 deep dish steelies with centre caps. But i am really hanging out to get these on the car. Just a shame my daily driver needs tyres also. 18” tyres arent cheap either.

I was considering getting in touch with Barrel Bros about a pair of wide snowflakes for rear of the xf. But i cant afford to do anything like that ill just dream haha

well yesterday was a rather eventful day. and frustrating day. :(

one of the wheels came out mint. it was the wheel that i had painted a few weeks back. other than a final polish, its ready to go.

Ali87HW.jpg

the others, well i fucked up. I had run out of etch primer, and decided to used a generic VHT primer, well what a mistake that was. it would appear that the VHT primer is enamel, and it reacted with what was left of the old paint, and did not adhere to the wheels. so after clear coating them yesterday and letting them dry. as i started to remove the masking, i noticed the fresh paint was peeling in bits like plasti-dip. I investigated a little further, and and sure enough i was able to peel all the clear coat, paint and primer back to bare alloy as a soft flexible, rubbery like film.
at first i thought I had just rushed the painting of them and the paint was still too soft, then I realised that the only thing i had done different was used a different primer, other than etch primer.

so this is what I ended up with, 3 wheels looking like this again...

UAXe3uX.jpg

back to square 1 with 3 wheels. another $100 in paint, and a few days work and i might have them finished :(

kilrust gloss black.. straight on the alloy, no clear needed.. done? $16

i think it would still need the clear coat to get the super glossy finish that the good one has.

kill rust black is an epoxy gloss, it's what i used to use on EVERYTHING

i have since gone to big cans of supercheap gloss acrylic black from supercheap for half price because it's nearly as good but would react with other paints being acrylic. the wheels on my gemini are done in the supercheap acrylic, but you'll probably never see them clean anyway clear would help on them.. less gloss than the killrust

well nothing has been happening on the Escort, or the wagon for that matter.

ive just been taking it out and about and showing it off  :P

I discovered a couple of weeks back at the Cars and Coffee event, that my driver's seat was in fact broken :( I thought something was up, because my back was killing me. so yep, i had a bit of a play around, and backrest frame is broken down the bottom on one side.
so, i was always planning to remove the drivers seat to keep it from splitting (like it already is) so this is the perfect time to do it.

I am also getting very very over this weather. the carport at home, being so high roofed, means the poor car still cops the rain down the passenger side of the car.
add the wind, and it cops a bit of the weather.
The wind also manages to blow a lot of shit into the garage where the wagon is sitting, so the bonnet keeps getting stuff all over it. the XF isnt quite water tight yet, otherwise id have hosed it off by now. sooon.

these are a couple of pics from the Cars and Coffee event a couple weeks ago.
