I've never been to a hillclimb, motorkhana OR road tour event. :)

How does the road tour event work?... like a treasure hunt?

yeah the tour event is like a set of directions, with clues you need to find answers to. which is why its hard when youre the only one in the car.

im going to miss the hill climb, because its on the sunday, and im not staying down there over night. so only the tour and the motorkahna, which im spectating only

well here it is.

im not 100% happy with this wheel. the paint has come up great, but the polishing job looks shit.
I dont know what I did different, or maybe it just needs to be hit harder with the sanding, but im not just as happy with it as I am the others. This wheel seems to have a lot of deeper pitting and scratches, so i dunno. looks ok, and im sure it will look fine on the car. although, I am considering going over them again with 2000 grit paper, to try get a bit more shine out of them

I'd be happy with it because it will be covered in dirt in a day or so.. how well will it clean when washed is probably a valid question? is the polish going to help keep the dirt from sticking?

Sanding looks okay id say the finishing polishing method you are using is not sufficient enough to bring out the shine. Need to get a few different grade polishes and pads then finish with a wool pad with purple polish.

I have a metal polish which is fairly aggressive to do the initial polish, then to get the shine into it ive been using Bowens own Metal Polish, which is just a liquid, not abrasive at all.

I want to try doiin the final polish with a powerball.

I just tried polishing a little more on the wheels by hand, using the same stuff ive been using, and it seems it is just down to polishing. But, i think ill still try a foam ball in a drill, just to make it a little easier.

A couple of weeks ago i put together a decent length of tasks that needed doing to the escort, both short and long term.

A couple of things were a must do before this weekend. Its a good feeling to know im knocking some of these things off.

So far ive sorted out the starting issue. It seems to start nearly at the flick of the key now, like it used to when i first got it, no more womdering if im going to need to jump or roll start it.

I dropped the rusty, poo brown dirty water from the cooling system, again for about the 10th time, flushed the entire system, put clean water in, ran it up to temp, dropped it again, which it came out pretty clean, somhave filled the cooling system with coolant, at 1:1 ratio, so its nice and clean and green at the moment. Will be interesting to see how green it stays after saturday, which will be about 250km round trip, then depending how im feeling i might head up to Beechworth for the night to catch up with my parents on holidays. If i decide to take the escort, it will be a good run for it, and interesting to see what happens to cooling system.

The last thing that was a priority before the weekend was to service the diff again. But i forgot to pick up the additive i run, and wont have time to do it before work tomorrow, so ill just leave it as is for the weekend.

ok I couldnt resist. I had to go change the diff oil, without the additive.

the oil that came out of the diff has only been in there about a year, and wowsers it was thick AF, and black. like almost sludgy :o

I put the new oil in, and the knock is still there. so either its so bad the oil hasnt helped (which i doubt given the condition of the old oil) OR its something more sinister inside the diff, like i have actually broken something, OR its not the diff at all, but a mate of mine suggested the tailshaft. which would really piss me off because I had the tail shaft built with new unis last year.

at least i had a helper

and this piece of shit thing. does a good job, but fuck what a mess it makes :(

i used one of these pumps(contaminated it with metal probably now though)
stuck a heater hose over the tube that is normally in the bottle, and put the other end inside the diff fill hole..
hooked the hook outlet over the oil change bucket and pumped it out mess free until the hook fell off the bucket..

i have a cheap drill pump that may work also.. haven't tried it yet https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Drill-Powered-Pump-DIY-Plumbing-Water-Fluid-Transfer-Pond-Flood-Container/401518327652?epid=1339934510&hash=item5d7c5b7764:g:K00AAOSwuShaaKuL

while you were under there, did you not rock the wheels back and forth? and the tailshaft to see if the back lash is worse?

yeah i had the gearbox in 1st, and handbrake on, yeah there is a bit of backlash to say the least lol. i wouldnt expect just backlash to create a knock upon taking off like this. whats odd is there no shudder or vibration to go wit the knock. i wont have time to look into it before saturday, so ill just leave it.

By the sounds of it Panko, you could have a broken spider pinion shaft. Might be time to source an English (banjo) diff, as these Borg-Warner 8-bolts are rubbish.

Yep Gerg thats what im thinking has happened.

I have been offered another standard diff when im ready. From an auto car, so 3.77 or 3.9 ratio (down from 4.11 currently) the catch is the replacement is still in the car, so the guy has to be ready to drop his atlas diff in so i can take his BW.

The problem running a banjo diff is finding one with a good ratio to suit the 1300

Apparently there were a lot of Aussie-assembled small cars that used that diff, including Corollas. Maybe they're more plentiful or had better ratios? My TF Corty used an 8-bolt with 2.77 centre. Not sure if compatible though.

definitely not wiht a 2.77.
I dont think i could go any lower than 3.77. it needs to high ration to get it going.
Ideally i want a 5 speed in the car, but its not as simple as it should be. if I could drop a 5 sped in no worries, id be keeping the 4.11

A Sierra box is the go, right? That could start to get a bit spendy importing things like that though.

yeah sierra Type 9 is the way. but yeah even here in Aus if i found one id be looking at, at least a couple grand for one

i'll give you the spiel the carby shop bloke gave to Me to justify twin webers..

just spend it and be in love with the car, you won't care about fuel economy when it is an absolute pleasure to drive..it will be transformed .. (can be done for $2000 CHEAP!)(cheap in the scheme of things.. it's like 2 rego's with insurance etc.. )

yep. trust me, a 5 speed conversion is big on the list of things i want to do to this car.
I have realised very recently, that this car is one that im sure im going to hold onto for a long time, and if ever the time came I HAD to sell it, i cant lose out, other than the pain of seeing it go.
I have sort of envisioned where im going with this car.
Im about to fit RS 4 spoke wheels to it, I have sitting in my room a set of mint condition genuine Ford - Carello spot lights, still with their original leather covers, that I want to fit to it, but unfortunately my brackets i got given dont fit with the full front bumper, so it gives me a reason to ditch it for the corner bumpers. now I know the corner bumpers are NOT an XL spec thing, but got i hate the full front bumper with overriders, and the corner bumpers make such a big difference to their look. I think with the RS wheels, the spot lights and corner bumpers done, the exterior will be near done to how i want it.
further down the track, I so much want to fit a 5 speed, build a nice little worked 1300 for it, afterall i bought this car because i like oldschool tuning and modifying, but there is a catch (or 2, or 3)
Firstly, I have the wagon being restored, which is going to leave me with a big whole in my pocket by the time thats done.
Secondly, and a big one for me, is with recent events, and me now knowing the fate of my job/workplace in 12 months time, giving me stressed, and very down and feeling myself slipping back into depression again, I think next year when my work closes in 12 months time, I want to take off and travel a bit. just within australia, and all by road. So ive already starting looking into 4x4s, and have already started putting together a list of places i want to go, and a rough route, and time I want to take away, on my own, just taking each day at my own pace.
So i dare say that come this time next year, both the wagon and escort will be parked up at my parents place in storage for a month or longer while i take some time for myself. I wish i could do the trip now, but I just cant afford to, financially and mentally, it wouldnt be a great time to be on the road travelling alone.

that was a very long winded response to your post @deankdx, but yes in the scheme of things doing a 5 speed conversion, and spending that much on a car i plan to own long term is not a lot of money, but I have car plans, and I have short(er) term life plans that will be getting in the way of car plans.

well this is where the car ended up this morning. back in the driveway with the bonnet up. Yep, I didnt make it to the RSOCV vs TCCA event :(

lets start from the start.

went to start the car this morning, and nope, it wouldnt start. which is infuriating in itself, because it has been fine since fitting the new starter solenoid, so why this morning has it decided to not run.
I attempted to roll start it, usually that works, NOPE! so, yet again I had to jump start it. Because I had been trying to start it, it had flooded, so when it did start, it backfired and died a couple times before it would run happily. by the time i did this, and got ready to go, it was already 815, and I hadnt had breakfast. I was meant to be at the start point by 800. i got in the car, and took off, got to the start point, and I could smell coolant. jump out, and sure enough, its dropping coolant out onto the ground WTF! got the screw drivers out of the boot, and started checking hose clamps. all were tight. upon closer inspection, i discover it has split a heater hose. whats annoying is, the start point is only 10 minutes from home, so in that short time, it has split.

after nearly tearing up, I told the guys from the club i was bailing on the event, and explained why, then left the car while i went and grabbed maccas breakfast and collected my thoughts.

when i returned to the car, a few of the guys had offered to help fix it on the spot, but we all very quickly realised we had no way of catching the coolant that we would lose upon fixing the hose, and no way of putting it back into the cooling system, so left it at that, and i limped the car home.

so here I am, the biggest motorsport event of the year for the car club, at home fixing my car, instead enjoying the beautiful weather, out in country victoria, in the escort.

Bugger, by the time it's ready, My wagon should be.. we can go to Calder and see which diff blows up first?

is Calder on again soon is it? tonight?

on the note of the diff, I did a little more investigating, and found the issue. this time i took the rear wheel off and drum off. the problem? its either the end axle bearing (driver's side) or the axle spline is damaged. but its definitely something at the very outer end of the RH axle.
