Nice.

They'll clean up a treat and NO you lazy bugger they wont take to much effort to do! Piece of cake.

One thing that really fucks me off with wheels like this is when tyre shops put the wheel weights on the outside like that. It fucks the finish on the rim and they tend to pitt with moisture under the weight. Makes it harder to get a good surface finish on the lip.

take a trip to SA and leave them with @hendrixhc he likes polishing alloy.

wonder what they'd look like fully polished with no black outs etc.

Definitely need the black centres to offset the polished alloy.

haha yeah im sure ill be able to do it, but i think ill be asking plenty of questions as to how to get them looking schmick.

would you paint the black first then polish the alloy?

ill be getting Trackside Race and Rally to fit the new tyres, and make sure no weights on the outside.

Id polish them first then mask them well and paint.

I use the VHT gloss black caliper paint to paint mine. Its hard, heat resistant, flows well and doesnt require primer underneath.

2 years later and it still looks like new with a wash over.

I use 80 grit to get the deep scratches out and gutter rash out then go to 240 then 500 then polish.

If you want a real mirror like finish use some 1200 wet after the 500 and change the buffing wheel regularly for a new one.

Yeah was going to suggest 1200 before polish, also in between the 500 and 1200 a bit of steel wool lays it down nicely too.

Hendrix, when you say buffing wheel, do you use a machine buffer?

i have one but reckon it would be a pain the ass to get into the wheels.

Yeah i just use the rag polishing wheels in the kits from bunnings and supercheap. They just go in the drill.

what about sanding? or do you do all that by hand?

ill just stick to cordless drill and 2" sanding pads and flappers. or at least give them a go. then a powerball to polish.

can you take some close up before and after pics, (i wont be trying to get out every dent or scratch) but wouldn't mind doing similar on the bathurst globes. then again, i'd probably want to polish the stainless and paint everything better if i did the wheels only

yeah ill be taking progress photos. im not sure how far ill go. at least smooth the slight putting out, but wont necessarily go as far as to take it all completely out.

OK dokie. I got started on the worst of the 4 wheels today.

I got this...
IQkmOBJ.jpg
and these from BodyShop Paint Supplies in Dandenong
cRQOwwo.jpg

this is what i was starting with.

hsO2qJQ.jpg

half the face and the face of the lip done with 600 grit. coming up ok so far.

OUbMasT.jpg

this is so far. face done and lip face done with 1200 grit on the drill, then again by hand went and dry 1200. and a metal polish. still not 100% happy yet, and i still have to do the dish yet.

@hendrixhc what do you use for a polish?
I have just been using a basic metal polish, which I know is more of a maintenance polish. so id assume i need to use something with a compound in it. so, what do you recommend, that has a polishing compound?

they are cleaning up easier than i expected, this was about 4 hours on and off working on this wheel, and it was the worst of the lot. obviously the paint still needs to stripped and painted. but thats the easy part.

I just use autosol. Cleans them up very quickly.

As for the stripping the paint i wouldnt bother unless it is flaky. I just clean the wheels down with a degreaser and then mask the polished sections and spray withe caliper paint. 2 very light coats to start off. Like a ghost coat, then lay about 4 or 5 thicker, wet coats.
