Lol whut?

simple. you agreed to meet me friday evening to pick up a tailgate. so thats what I'm doing.

I'm waiting on just the tailgate now, and if i dont get it, the car can't go to the panel shop, and it will be your fault.

i saw this beast today(caught up with Aaron at Penlink)

its bloody clean and the wheels to My surprise suit it better in person.. exhaust sounds great too, but can hear the carby over it with a decent rev still.

interior is almost immaculate, so is the engine bay.  definitely a cool car..... also saw a Mk2 cortina with similar engine bay and a V6 capri engine... now there's a tempting mod, it sounded nice too

It was good to catch up finally.

When we catch up again away from there in our own time, we'll go for a drive and compare etc.

by comparison to the Gem, yeah my exhaust is quiet :P but its surpising how much it opens up when its warm and under load. Its more than loud enough for me (for now) while its getting along.

I had a good chat with the fella with the V6 Cortina. Funny, small world. It would appear we have (or my father) have some common connections from dad's old Renault days, and his motorkhana days.

I followed that cortina for about half the drive home, and far out its fast. Was fun having a bit of a play with him :)

well today certainly did not go to plan.

I (unknowingly) tried to kill the escort, but it wasn't my fault.

So this is how the car ended up by the end of the day :( with the 12" spare on the front

What lead to this? A chain of events that made today so fucking annoying.

Dad and I drove up to Emerald in the Escort to change the wheels on the XF, ready to go to the panel shop tomorrow, and pull the last few bits of trim off.
on the return trip, i noticed the temp gauge on the Escort sky rocketing. when i got home and backed into the driveway, the gauge went hard over in the red, as i walk around the front of the car, there is steam pouring out the overflow pipe, but no coolant. pop the bonnet, and its hissing and farting, so it was properly cooked. :(

my first thought was to take it for a short run to try cool it down, and get some airflow over the radiator. I did that, and it helped, but wouldn't come back down to normal, and every time i stopped it would just hit the red again and start boiling.

i limped it home, and parked it and let it cool down.
went and popped the cap off once it cooled down, and found there was no visible coolant left in the radiator. W T F! (i should note, that before leaving for Emerald i checked the radiator and it was green and up the top at normal level)
so it was clear that somewhere along the line it had overheated and spat the coolant out the overflow pipe.

on the bottom of the radiator cap, i found chunks of what looked to be gasket silastic that had dislodged somewhere in the cooling system, and wedged itself between the bottom of the radiator cap, and the radiator, so it wasnt sealing.

I decided to do a flush to make sure there was no more of this shit in the system. dropped the bottom radiator hose, and the coolant (which was nice and green this morning) came out a horrible brown rusty colour, another W T F moment. flushed the radiator, put it back together, filled it up with water and drove it. back to normal again. I got home and popped the cap off again, and it was rusty brown again :( so i dropped the bottom hose again, flushed it and put it back together and filled it with just water.
it was THEN, i found this...

 bastard!!!! so thats how the escort was left, on the 12" spare in the garage.

FYI, a couple of comparison pics of the original 12" wheel and original tyre, vs my 15s.

fancy coolant.. i haven't added that to mine yet.. not loving the sudden low coolant issue..

did the screw go in far enough for a leak? i'd have heard that screw in the tyre on most My cars, tick tick tick as it goes onto the bitumen.

Well whats strange about the tyre, i pulled the screw out, put some air in and so far holding air.

So ill check it tomorrow and see if its still up.

As for the cooling system, its honestly a blessing in disguise. Because i flushed the system a few months back when i put the corect thermostat in, and a few months before that when i put the current radiator in.

But because i cooked it today, its obviously cleaned the cooling system right up, hence now dropping a shit tonne of rusty crap from the rest of the cooling system.

try some soapy water on the screw hole, yeah betting you didn't Mark where it was?

did you use any chemical flushing agent for the cooling system? i remember using one 20yrs ago ish and it must have unblocked a rusted particle blocking  a hole in the heater core ..

I know where the hole is, ive left it sitting with the hole at the top.

I havent used a chemical flushing agent yet. But i am going to try that. But it will have to wait. Tomorrow is moving day for the wagon ;)

i had to try it before taking the wheel off. its a little too narrow, and not enough dish for me, and i hate the body colour. definitely needs to be silver i think.

Now THAT looks cool.... Sleeper level, 1million. :P

Just get widened ones for the back...
You've got the front runners sorted!

The body colour wheels actually suits it, tbh.
It's just the inner wheel arches that need to be detailed, de-grimed, etc.

they also sit about 4 inches inwards from the guards, compared to the 15s that sit about 10mm inward from the guard. much better fill.

this is why i want 13x6s. 185 wide tyres, dish, and hub caps. give that look but so much meaner.

ok so nothing much has been happening. oh, apart from having problems with overheating haha. stupid english cars. i have it sorted though, i think. just slowly periodically flushing the cooling system out. its obviously decided now that im driving it more, to dislodge crap stuck to the cooling channels in the block, and has started causing havoc with the cooling system. but it is nearly right again.
I discovered the block has a drain plug on the side for the cooling system, which makes flushing it amazingly easy :D

anyway. i took the car to Small Ford Sunday, on sunday just gone. it got plenty of attention. the Small Ford Sunday is run by the RSOCV, and was voted recently by Classic Ford magazine (UK), "The best small Ford show in the world", and along with a new venue this year, it also beat the previous record of entries :D awesome day out, apart from the sunburn, oh the sunburn :(

Tomorrow (wednesday) the car goes in for its final and proper wheel alignment. Im taking it to a guy in Bayswater, Trackside Road and Rally, who is highly recommended by a number of the guys from the RSOCV, im pretty keen to see what he does with it. Oh and @deankdx will like him, he races a Gemini, and has a couple of classic, and super rare Isuzu.

Being a race and rally shop, he has loads of race only tyres, dirt, tarmac rally, slicks, etc etc. but he also has some awesome wheels, including a pair (yes sadly only 2) 13x6 steelies to suit the escort. While im there tomorrow, im going to get him to measure the offset and width, and see if they would fit my car.

And price up some 13" tyres.

i might have some interesting old school mags for it soon.

They are alloy centre, and steel rim. $150

*these are the wheels i really really really really really want for my car. they are genuine Lotus 13x6" steelies. only id have the hub caps installed

snapped at PenLink a couple weeks back :P

on the way home from SFS i followed this fella. a genuine German RS2000. I wish i had gotten a photo of the fuel tank in it

I saw this in a Mk2 sedan at the show. it had a late Mk2 drop tank installed, so they used the original side tank, and turned it into a tool box.

should chuck the bike in the boot and do a ride along Dandenong creek trail while the car is getting done(unless they will do it while you wait and chat to you about what they are doing and why..
if you are happy with the service, let us know.. pedders are getting slack lately..

big fan of oldschool mags and fat tyres, i think i'd prefer them over the wide stockies..(although.. depends on the overall look.. sleeper style i like also)

i was painting my interceptor style wheels for the gemini today(black like yours) and thought about chrome dress rims for them.. wonder if they'd suit? you have the chrome bits here and there to tie it in also. borrow a set off the VL behind in pic and see what they look like..

Im going to be there with him while he is doing the alignment.

I have thought about the chrome dress rings, but all it reminds me of is a slammed commodore with P plates on it, riding on black stockies with chrome dress rings lol. its part of the reason i at least fitted chrome wheel nuts. gave the wheels a little bit of something in the middle.

to be honest though, i see this photo of the car, and other rolling shots, and i still love these wheels, especially love seeing how it sits down over the rear tyres and fills the arches (i feel naughty but i think i want to go a tad lower again in the front)

the main reason for looking around at sets of 13s is because sadly these wheels are buckled, and i need to get them re-rolled. I am (and im not) keen to do the Adelaide tour in the car at the end of this month, with the RSOCV, 1500km in 3 days, but i do not want to be doing it with a constant wheel wobble :(

are they XP hub caps? i like the pattern on them over all the others..(what's with that roof rack ..)

surely getting the wheels or at least 2 re rolled doesn't cost the earth? or borrow a different set off someone in the club for the weekend?

Possibly XP falcon. But id say cortina.

Yeah i can borrow a set of hotwires for the weekend with wet weather tyres (soft compound)

i just figure if i owned a set of 13s i could change things up a bit :P

ill ask for a price to re-roll wheels tomorrow.

If that black escort has extractors off a capri cut at the collector and run thru all the way to centre of rear in 3" with a 2L and TP1 pinto cam... thats my old escort. Original colour on compliance should be same as yours panko. That thing rolls on 13" because I rolled and cut and shut those guards all round.Give away will be motor has been moved back about 2" from standard.

That thing is a DEAD ringer.

I killed the bottom end racing an lc torry and sold it......about 23 years ago.... lol

Oh.... and 2L capri extractors dont fit in mk1 engine bay.... but they do when massaged with an oxy....
