It's probably just the angle of the photo but there's something about that rear end that just looks... odd? Think I'd have to modify it slightly but I'd have to see it in the flesh first to decide what to do with it.

And yeah a van would be easiest to convert but I was thinking they were fewer in numbers in Oz than 2dr sedan. I think you can bring in cars from the UK now can't you? Talk with someone who deals in British car parts, get a shell brought in, put local stuff into it. I suggest it in that method because it means no worries about asbestos checks.

Bring it in minus engine, gearbox, and brakes?
Or with those bits in the back, but disassembled and clean?

If brakes are available locally then skip those. Gearbox should be fine as far as I know but the clutch is probably iffy so skip it if possible. Engine I'd strip it of gaskets (ie take the head off, remove fluids, should be fine). I'd possibly even go a step further and get the shell stripped (dip or blasted) before importing, partly because I think it would be cheaper to do over there. It's probably not a priority any more but it was a bit of a cash cow to pick on classic cars with asbestos quarantine checks.

I agree, they are a bit odd looking.

That said, I would also like to have one.

I have just spent about 2 days worth of work on the Escort, polishing it, after it got covered in what i can only think to be grinding spray. :(

last week dad and i built his new workbench into the shed, which involved a lot of cutting and grinding of steel. The car was in the middle of the carport across the front of the shed, and we were working 4-6m away.
at the time i felt sure it was fine and the majority of the work was away from the car, but obviously not good enough.

the below pic of my clay bar after just ¼ of the boot lid. To give an idea how badly it got covered.

the video below gives you a comparison of before and after clay bar

other than the fact it needed doing due to shit stuck all over it, it was well overdue for a proper polish.

id forgotten how much the colour “pops” in the sun.

this is just after clay bar. No polish, wax,  nothing.

today i finished the polish job on it.
All done by hand.
1 - clay bar

2 - Bowden’s Own - Paint Cleanse and Restore

3 - Mother’s Carnauba Wax (what I had)

4 - Bowden’s Own Fully Slick (sealer)

I think the results speak for themselves.

Still isnt a professional job by any means. And one day i think id like to get it done by a pro, to try get some of the scratches and swirls out of it that i cant. But for now, it looks a lot better than it did.

*just dont look at it up close*

Nothing wrong with a few scratches and swirls if it's original old paint if you ask me.

Next time you need to clay a car, you can make your life a billion times easier if you get a clay pad rather than the old bars.

I still have an entire brand new clay bar lol.
i tend to use about ⅓ at a time of the bars, so it will be a couple years before i need to replace it at this race

Clay bar and orbital.

orbital you have to be careful with, if the paint is thing.
i learned the hard way, rubbing through the paint on the escort, to the RH side of the rear number plate. (Left of RH tail light)  Might see it in the photo of the back of the car above. Black line.
and there are a few spots on sharp edges where the paint is going thin from the orbital.
whoops 😬

Not much new happening with the Esky.

I took it out for a spin for the first time since we went into lockdown. Since its last drive, I changed the accelerator pump jet back to a single squirt jet, so it wasnt pumping fuel down the second barrel when the butterfly was closed.

It took a bit to get started, then it was a real pig for a while lol. coughing, backfiring through the carby.

Driving it, it had the hesitation back, mid revs again. i was thinking it was the pump jet again. in anger, i did a U turn to head home, and gave it a squirt, WOT through every gear, right to red line, up to 100km/h....and presto, the hesitation went away. so kept going for my drive for about an hour.

God it is nice to drive, compared to the XF and Discovery, with with steering boxes and recirculating ball steering. the Escort feels so so tight by comparison.

**NOW FOR A BIT OF A RANT**

The link below is to an eBay ad for a Mk1 Escort the same as mine, 1975 1300XL, thats for sale in the UK. the moment i look at it, i knew it was an Australian car. the thing is immaculate. better than mine :o

Sure enough, the guy bought it and took it from Australia in 2013, now he is selling it, and he clearly makes a point of saying he wont sell to anyone abroad (no international sales).

This really, REALLY pisses me off. They buy them out of Australia due to the lack of rust in our cars, and the fact our shells are better (double plated strut towers for example), then they pull this crap.

Fair game when it was for sale in Australia, for him to grab it, but to then refuse to sell it back to anyone who might want to bring it back to Australia, what a shit act IMO. 🤬

it's currently 9000 uk, would be well over $20k here, do you think there'd be a buyer for an auto 4 door at that figure?

maybe. 4 doors are starting to come out of the woodwork. And its an auto shell so thats a big bonus.
however its also a good point. That he has such a high price on it, because they are worth so much in UK

he probably paid Fk all for in 2013, compared to if it had been in the UK, so now he is just making a big profit

you'd probably be able to get a escort club UK member to buy it to ship it over anyway.. there's more than one way to go about it if it had to be had.

might be lost job due to corona.. need to sell. who knows, might even have a lot of money in it even
