Panko's Mk1 Escort (Round 2)

Recommended Posts

i am envious of the last random drive/thrash..  i still haven't got My gemini fixed.. and now although a good time to be fixing it, won't be able to go further than the local shops pretty much.. although, i might be able to go for a "Job interview"  somewhere possibly or something..  take a pet with you and go to the "VET" perhaps

TBH, its not going to stop me from going for little drives here and there as i test things out. Im not going to lie. but yeah whilst we are in lockdown, ill be smashing out as much work on my cars as i can, within the restraints of my bank account of course 😕

I will be trying to smash out this wiring and heater box fix up as fast as i can, so i can go onto finishing the buggy thats been in bits for yonks.

what have i gotten myself into? haha

wait its not so bad....

Parcel shelf out.

This is getting a little more complex

yFFqK1y.jpg

Kick panel off, ok now its getting serious 😮

03ALK9v.jpg

interestingly the colour behind the kick panel is actually darker, much like another factory green that is darker...

t7rB6W9.jpg

it still amazes me how clean this is. no matter where i look, no rust.

B7crmHR.jpg

ok now you've done it Panko. the passenger seat has been removed, and there is wires everywhere.

So much for a simple rewire of the radio *facepalm*

Enter snowball affect 😬

LcsMhuT.jpg

Ok Ok ill explain.

I realised that there was some dodgy wiring going on with the radio.

then there was my rushed wiring when i installed the sub and amp, and the tacho. The resolve? TO REPLACE IT ALLLLLLL!!!! 😜😼

The tacho feed wire - too short to run it properly, and to its potential new location

Amplifier constant power supply - too short to run it properly

Signal cable from radio to sub amp - too short for radio to go into its new location

Speaker wires - no joins from radio harness to speakers in the doors - cut and put plugs in line

I cant wait to have this finished and all tidied up.

I have an oil pressure gauge and volts gauge here. they are Veglia Bortelli brand. turns out they are from a Jaguar XJ6. But i do not have a pressure sender unit, but know the part number for the jaguar sender unit, that this gauge would have been installed in.

SO, i wonder if an XJ6 sender would fit the escort block? They are both british, and 70s cars.

That wiring is about 1/2 as untidy as my XCs.

I have some sort of fault in there that when i put the indicators on the ignition system cuts out with each flash of the blinker. Something i have to fix still.

Oil sender from a Jag, worth more than an Esky..??  😲

not terribly expensive actually. less than $100.

i was surprised to see these gauges selling in NOS form for about $100. i would have thought they'd be worth more than that

if you can get the resistance RANGE for it in spec, you should be able to look up a NARVA equiv with the right thread for the escort, i had to do similar for the oddball engine swaps over the years (would be more like $25 if so)

a job for SPArKy_Dave and Mr Polson
VDO, Fuelmiser or Speco maybe, but I've never seen a Narva oil pressure sender.

So while you're at work, can you see if you have a part number cross reference for an Oil pressure sender for a Series 3 Jaguar XJ6?

Cheers :P

More (slow) progress today.

I had to (nervously) drill a new hole into the firewall to run some 8 gauge wire, and a lighter signal cable for the tacho feed.

there was a factory pressing directly below the main wiring harness, so it was perfect to drill out.

vBgTFO2.jpg

then i found this grommet in the garage, and figured that would neaten it up, but it did also meaning making that hole a 17mm hole :o to get the grommet in

zuABQ9g.jpg

almost looks factory ;)

PIOlGp4.jpg

made the new amplifier constant power supply cable. yes its + but i used black cable to make a little more discrete.

and run it through my new hole.

I also fed the new (black) tacho signal cable through as well.

UVpET6h.jpg

then this happened 🤬

trying to remove the nut to remove the spade and put a double spade on there for tacho signal, and the thread snapped clean off.

new coil ordered. play the waiting game until next week

nH4hlJQ.jpg?1

got the centre panel in to test fit, and see how it would look. took a little big of minor trimming here and there but im happy with it.

working out where the radio will go

thinking about the gauges today, as well as not having the oil pressure sender unit, i also realised im missing the mounting brackets.

So i started thinking ill just replace them with new ones, complete with everything i need.

Should I just bite the bullet, and splurge on a set of VDO cockpit gauges?

Volts, Oil pressure, water temp.

If i got this path, I will be swapping the volts and oil pressure gauges with the ones in the XF because they ones in the XF are a little more period correct (i think) to the 70s, than the new cockpit range are.

these are the new VDO Cockpit gauges

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VDO-COCKPIT-VISION-12v-GAUGE-SENDER-KIT-OIL-100psi-WATER-TEMP-VOLT-350010021/323420623620?epid=12028920503&hash=item4b4d5f1304:g:Q-cAAOSwXB1bf20k

photo purely for reference.

But you can see in this, my XF VDO Volts and Oil Pressure have the coloured warnings. I think they would suit the Escort more maybe? and the plain black gauges suit the wagon a bit more?

looks like you could pick up the power wire from that starter relay? would make it much more neat/discreet at the battery post end if that's what you wanted.

as for the gauges, they are dear, but if you can justify it.. i actually prefer the plain black faces.

good point i hadnt thought of that.
But, i think im happy to go straight from the battery than off a 45 year old starter cable.

They are dear yes.

I was looking at cheap chinese gauges. less than $100 for a set of 3, but its that whole, "do it once, do it right" thing.

the cheap chinese ones are garbage, not accurate at all i think.. i got them for My gemini just to fill holes.

I'd like more VDO ones, but not paying the premium

Finally feels like I am making some headway with this little project haha

I spent today working on the centre panel. getting the radio mounted etc.

home made aluminium mounting tabs

zHSRLbZ.jpg

yTP3sPT.jpg

next was working out the mounting. I decided it would be nice to able to remove the cradle at any point without having to remove the entire dash to get to nuts on the back side of it. So, i went with rivet nuts again.

LWV2aun.jpg

mounted.

now due to some odd shapes of the aftermarket dash and the cradle not matching those odd shapes, i did have to space the back 2 tabs upwards to make it work.

PN2ygRe.jpg

this is the plan with the gauges and switch layout...

Heater fan switch, gauge, gauge (centre of car), gauge, switch. Tacho next to radio

EPbJNjg.jpg

2FnETY3.jpg

Rivet nuts for the tacho :)

WVpSdK1.jpg

Im starting to like this layout...a lot :D

yCKg5iu.jpg

DaL8Cxz.jpg

the hope is tomorrow ill have the dash panel in tomorrow, and so i can finalise the wiring lengths, and finish off the wiring. The i will be able to start putting the interior back together again.

I think ive convinced myself to just buy the VDO gauge set and be done with it, which means when they arrive, another round of wiring to do

S3 xj6 would mean only the six cylinder variations, so the 4.0L? Yes? Otherwise it would be xj12

I once helped my uncle convert an S1 XJ12, to Chev V8.

So to be fair on Polson... you never know. :P
