Panko's Mk1 Escort (Round 2)

Recommended Posts

Its mostly just little stuff that lets it down.

It will never be perfect, and its still driveable and will always be fine with the oil leaks, but that doesnt do my back any favours

Mavic pro? I'm trying to justify buying one myself haha.

One thing i always see with watermarks, is people do as you have and put them down in a corner like that.

and the first part that gets cropped out if someone uses your pic for something.

yeah its a Mavic Pro.

sub 2kg, so it can be flown without an RPL, but with just an ARN from CASA, which is how ive gone about it for now. I still need to get some bits and pieces to cover my ass like signs or cones so i can mark out a perimeter for when im flying etc.

yeah i agree with the watermark. i can put it right across the image if i want, and just fade it out. i havent made any form of advertising public yet, because I dont have much media to promote the business yet.

The mavic has a Sport mode which turns off all the sensors, and ups its top speed, also makes it a lot harder to fly. So much fun though.

The issue is, as i found out on the weekend, is the drone industry is so, almost frowned upon, if you do 1 thing that isnt cotia.

So i was in Adelaide getting some shots of a cycling event i was attending. I wasnt making money off the photos, i was purely flying the drone for the joy of it in this case. I was doing the right thing by flying away from crowds (30m horizontal), until, like always people start coming and watching. To the point i had another fully licensed (RPL) operator who was walking with his missus, come and have a go at me for not complying to rules and regs. For all he knew i wasnt flying commercially until i told him i was certified. He was fkn rude about it, and i felt like saying “and you walked into that 30m exclusion zone to tell me I was doing the wrong thing”, but i left it alone.

This is why i need to get a few fold out signs just cover my ass.

Im not phased by people walking under it, but technically it makes the operator immediately liable if someone gets injured.

this is one of the images from the weekend. because of the social attitude towards drones, it can be hard to just put them up and get some photos. i only had mine in the air for all of about 10 minutes before i gave up on the weekend.

Yeah people go insane over them

." Ermagawd, there's a drone hovering 300m away from me, I think they're perving on me"

Its a niche, yet hard (because of legalities) to break into, but its something i want to give a solid crack. But yeah i do need to get some equipment to mark out this 30m perimeter exclusion zone.

The event on the weekend, they had an official, contracted drone service flying a DJI inspire. I didnt realise they had a blanket no drones within the event boundaries (for OH&S reasons)hence the photo above is taken outside the barriers of the track. Anyway, looking at some of the photos the offical drone pilot took, he was flying directly above some people, and in a few photos no more than 10m above them, although he had obviously approached them to ask them if they were ok with that, and got them to wave for the photo. Thats all fine, but i want to know if that technically breaks the law of 30m no fly zone.

He did have a hazard taped off area of approximately 30x30m, but once in the air he was not sticking inside that area. So it seems like a bit of a grey area that law.

aaaah........ the old 'grey' area.   Many a new Ferrari was bought by a Lawyer with such things.

Would love to see a drone shot of your Esky as you drive down conrod straight.  That beaut old chopper shot they used to have at bathurst, which has been forgotten.

Ha well i live in Melbourne. The drone can be set to follow an object, i havent tried it yet though.

It’s a pretty slow speed You have to maintain for the Mavic to follow, good way to get some great shots though.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

well in "Sport" mode they will do 65km/h. sport mode also turns off all the safety mechanisms, ie the sensors etc.

I often see damaged mavics for sale and wonder how, because these are so dam safe, with the sonar sensors etc etc, then i realise the dumbass has probably been flying it in Sport mode and lost control of it.

OK onto car related stuff again (epic post coming)

I spent today chasing Minis again, up around the Yarra Ranges. "Parmarama" (spirited drive to Alexandra pub for parmas)

anyway, I think ive discovered a bit of an issue with the engine. I have no idea what it is yet, but I am going to be changing the carby soon anyway, so thats a good start.

so what is the issue?

I did a bit of a spirited overtaking manoeuvre to get in front of a line of 3 old farts from the VicMini club :P, so 80km/h, dropped it back to 3rd gear, and let it rip. full throttle, pushed it out to over 100km/h in 3rd, at around 6000rpm, dropped it into top gear and pushed it out to around 120km/h to get clear of all 3 cars. It felt great, engine was on song, it was happy.

Later in the day, i went to do something similar, but this time leaving it in 4th, and it felt very underpowered and just not willing to get going, which at 100km/h in top gear its right on the point where it comes on song (~4000rpm) so generally dont need to drop it back out of 4th at that speed to overtake.
The issue is, some times it feels great, other times it feels crap. now it is a tired 1300, but its not consistent with its power/torque.
At lunch stop, i popped the bonnet up, and noticed that the fuel filter between the pump and the carby, was nearly dry, with fuel only trickling in. does this mean the fuel pump isnt keeping up? I have seen it full to the brim with fuel also.

I am not going to attack the fuel pump until I have got the 32/36 fitted and running. once I have that up and running, Ill know if the pump cant keep up or whatnot.

I have a bit to decide after today

As much as I love the 15" wheels, I am looking forward to getting them off the car. after driving the car for about 200kms today in twisty roads, its handling mint. its on rails, BUT, the low profile tyres are now doing my head in. they just dont have the give, and the car gets unsettled very easy on rougher roads. they look fantastic as a "show" wheel, or as a stance wheel, but the 13s I think are going to be much nicer on those sorts of roads.

Driving it for long periods

I feel something is going to have to change. the car runs the factory optioned 4.11:1 diff. So it screams on the highway, it also means it makes it easier for the car to get going. the other manual diff ratio that was available back in the day from new was a 3.9:1 diff, which would make the car that little bit nicer on the road (3900rpm @ 100km/h vs 4100 @ 100km/h (keep in mind it comes on song at 4000rpm)). But a 3.9 diff, may labour the poor 1300 off the line, although 1st is incredibly short.
In the long term I am thinking a Type9 5 speed is the way to go, and keep the 1300 and 4.11 diff. the 5 speed conversion is expensive. the box is from a Sierra, worth anywhere from $1000 to $2000, but they are the only 5 speed that will fit into a manual Escort body shell with very minor body work required.

OR
I drop a 1600cc engine in, which will go straight in, and then drop the diff down to a 3.77 ratio. a stock 1600, with its single barrel carby and crappy cast exhaust manifold, puts out around 60kw (compared to 43kw 1300). keeping in mind my 1300 is down a long way on compression. A good stock second hand 1600, with decent compression, would be fine to drop a warmed up cam in it, fit the weber, extractors, and ive got an engine producing easily double the stock power, and would have more than enough torque to push the taller diff like a 3.77 and I could then keep the 4 speed.

it will come down to the cost of an engine and diff (or centre if i can change just the centre) vs a complete 5 speed conversion to go behind a 1300.
The DIFF needs work also. if im going to change the centre, i might as well as do the diff up and replace the noisy bearings and tighten it up. so whats the cost of that vs replacing the diff with lets say a Mk2 diff (mini 9" diff) or an Atlas diff thats in good condition ready to go, which has a suitable ratio centre.

For now I just want to get the 13s finished and on, the 32/36 carby rebuilt and fitted and running, and replace the driver's seat. I think those 3 things will make it a much more enjoyable experience, than it currently is.

IT IS STILL FANTASTIC to drive. Today was fantastic fun, and it was great to let it stretch its legs, and put some solid kms on it, i loved it, but Im already feeling it due to the broken driver's seat frame doing my back in, and the high RPM on the open roads certainly taxing after a few hours. I think the 3 main things I want/need to do in the near future will just make it that much nicer to drive for now until I decide what to do about the diff or engine or gearbox combination. *in the long term I still think a 5speed conversion is the path I want to go down, but it probably isnt worth it with the tired 1300 still in there*

sorry about the epic post. Basically just spilling my thoughts onto the page

pity i couldn't give you a drive of the 1600 gemini.. Vs the 2litre.. bigger cubes, can't see why not.

i'm sure there's a fuel flow test for the fuel pump. it's likely to be in the gregorys etc.

could be ign timing related, vac advance, mechanical advance, point gap etc.. for the gutless ness

My ex brother in law had one of these eskys with a warm 1600 and downdraught weber. It used to go like a scalded cat BUT it was plagued with fuel starvation issues for months. Long story short when the goose tipped a bottle of metho in the tank to clear out moisture he unknowingly dropped the lid seal in the tank. every time he gave it a bootfull it would suck the seal down on to the fuel outlet and block fuel flow.

being electronic ignition points gaps etc dont exist lol. vac advance does though.

I know for sure the 1600 would be a mad upgrade, but in roundabout terms dropping a 1600 in also means changing the diff, thats why i want the 1600 torque etc.

dropping a 5 speed in would drop the rpm down to 3370rpm at 100km/h with the 4.11 diff. that is fkn mint! or if i drop a 3.77 diff in it would drop to 3770rpm at 100km/h, which would also be bearable, but not viable behind the 1300cc engine and 4 speed.

either way, nothing will happen in that regard for a while yet.

wheels, carby and driver's seat first.

If it were mine, I'd do this.^ ^ ^

Always the easiest way to reliable power.

Cam

Carb

Extractors.

Otherwise, new rings, new cam, possible rebore, diff ratio change, etc etc.. Pull out the 1300, 'box, diff, and keep in storage for later. Just my 11 cents worth.

(10 cents, plus GST)

I totally agree, and i think in the long run that is the path ill go down. it is cheap easy power, and id even be willing to stick the 1300 rocker cover on to disguise it (different length oil filler tubes)

but for now, ill put up with it.

well guys, seems im about to get cracking back into the escort for a short period.

Ive had a massive 4 weeks of work, and now a week off interstate for a break. Time to get cracking

I have 4 weeks until the RSOCV annual Show and Shine, this time at Geelong Water front. for me its a pretty decent drive in the Escort. Usually its held up in the Yarra Ranges.

so the "to do" list before the show and shine:

- get my RS wheels finished, tyres fitted and on the car :D

- get the 32/36 weber converted to manual choke and fitted to engine, WITH correct GT throttle cable setup (and hope its close enough to in-tune for the 1300)

- paint and fit the GT air cleaner hat to the 32/36 weber, so under the bonnet it looks like its meant to be there.

it doesnt sound like much, but there is a fair bit of masking and painting to be done with the wheels, GT throttle bracket and air cleaner.

I also have to get some rego forms signed for it on the 15th of october, otherwise it wont be going anywhere. (i fked up lol)

a little off topic for a moment....well still car related :P

last sunday morning, I caught up with an old school mate. we always kept in touch, but hadnt caught up in 5, 6, years maybe.

anyway, he and his old man are into motor racing. mostly tarmac rally. his old man races a Austin Healey 3000 Mk2, with a stroke 3.2L (i think) inline 6, on triple webers.

Ben, my mate, races a full street legal and engineered, 400HP R33 Nissan Skyline. He is a full time mechanic at The Healey Factory here in Melbourne (Austin Healey specialists), so between he has his dad, they know how to build a decent race car.

Anyway, we went and checked out a Cars and Coffee meet on sunday morning, in the R33. fantastic event, with some big dollar street drive race cars (Audi R8 for one). and the response from people watching Ben and I climbing out over the roll cage was just classic. they couldnt believe this thing was street legal and driven regularly on the road.

obviously Ben did the right thing and didnt do anything silly on the open road (his parents both work for VicPol), but the sheer acceleration, and rawness of this beast was just something else. 400HP, hearing the turbo spool, and the feeling it gave was insane.

we used to own XR6 Turbo Falcons, so the turbo 6 performance wasnt new, but the noise (being stripped out) and how raw the car was is what did it for me. awesome fun.

and, the best part is, ive now got the chance to go follow the targa events with Ben, as he is race mechanic for his Dad's Healey, and another Healey that also races

not bad for a car that he bought not running, for cheap.

it has genuine GT-R aluminium front panels, wing and its a rare Aus Delivered car with optioned Nismo 300km/h speed. The car is basically a GT-R with only RWD :D

I know 400HP isnt much these days when it comes to race cars, so his new engine should be impressive. RB30 with RB25 head, will be good for around 700HP on E85

Had a fairly productive day getting stuff sorted for the Escort.

Went to Weber Performance and picked up the cable choke conversion for the 32/36 carby thats going on the car eventually.

Picked up CPS extension forms for the car because my log book was getting a little thin.

Then I get a message from a mate of mine who owns a few Escorts saying, "i found these, I am picking them up for you tonight" with a link to a facebook ad, for 2 genuine Recaro seats, 80s-90s era.

The driver's one is in bad shape and will need reupholstering, but hes getting them for just over $200. The plan is to get just the driver's side reupholstered in a similar brown cloth to the original vinyl interior.

Tomorrow, I can focus on getting the wheels masked up ready for paint.

If i get started on the paint, while it dries between coats, ill start changing the carbies over.

bargain of the century those seats! what is the original trim on the left seat like? (might be able to sell that trim(for RS owner to put genuine trim back on his) to cover cost of trimming them to suit the brown vinyl rear(maybe brown cloth center and leather sides?
