well I feel like a total retard.

I couldnt resist, i had to do more looking into the noise coming from the diff. so again today I had the car up on stands, this time i removed the RHR wheel, and drum because I knew it was coming from that side. when I was spinning the hub by hand, I could feel how fucked the bearing is, not smooth at all. so thats what I assumed it was. HOWEVER, i noticed that the bump stop had moved, and was leaning forward, and not inline with the stop plate. This sits on top of the diff, and is held on by the U bolts that hold the diff to the leaf springs, so i loosened the U bolts, enough that using a rubber mallet i could move the bump stop back into place, then tightened everything back up. and would you know it, the noise is gone. I think it was that the U bolts were just loose enough to cause things to creek and grown as it was under load. God i feel like a total retarded idiot, massive facepalm moment. so, moral of this stories boys and girls, PERIODICALLY CHECK YOUR U BOLTS!!!!

It might just be the spider gears you're feeling?
They can create a very notchy feel as you turn the axle slowly.

Here's one for you both @Panko and @deankdx... :P

well you know how it goes.

fix a couple of things, break another, right?

ok I didnt break anything this time, but an issue thats been there for a while, has just gotten worse.

I drove the car all the way down to watch the hill climb today, and it ran like a dream the whole way. I had a passenger with me, and we were able to still talk comfortably sitting at around 95km/h on the highway. not too loud, comfy, ran smooth, temp was good, didnt leak coolant, no noise from the diff. happy days, OR NOT :(

About a week ago I had noticed a small patch of oil sitting on the ground under the car, and i stress small, like a couple or few drops. I knew its been leaking oil from both the engine and trans for a while, but only a seep and nothing to really stress about.
We had to stop to get fuel on the way home today, so i went into Warragul. the car was only parked for a few minutes, and by the time i came out there was oil dripping from the bell housing/gearbox.

when I got home, parked the car for about half hr in the driveway, and came back out ot move it into the garage, and sure enough it had been dripping again. and its the gearbox thats dropping the oil :( although it isnt an expensive fix, its just frigging annoying. this is getting ridiculous, because my daily driver needs work at the moment too. so i literally do not own a car that is 100% reliable lol

every car i've ever had leaked oil, even the full reco leaked after a few months..
depends on the severity on whether i fix it..wipe it.. doesn't drip while i am watching it.. = passes rwc and drag strip.. good to go

Welcome to my world... :P

well thats generally self inflicted in your case. you own more than enough cars, most of which are in bits because you have pulled them apart and not put them back together lol.

SO, anyone want to come replace the thermostat on my Mazda6? I have to remove the drive belt and power steering pump and lines to get to the thermostat. stupid modern cars.

i only like half the above message.. the part where you mention self inflicted reliability issues..
after reading a post from Thom driving a suzuki swift 2006, 1000km a week and 100,000+km in 2 years doing routine maintenance only.. makes us all wonder sometimes.

as for working on newish cars... nope..bad enough changing headlight globes on them..

its got less to do wiht the engine, than it does its orientation. being fwd means all the PS and AC etc etc have been engineered to suit being east/west format. that basic engine (Duratec) when its mounted the other way in RWD cars its much easier to work on.

the thing is, if that engine was stuck in the escort, I wouldnt be running the a/c, or the ps...hmmm ideas ;)

I'd be more worried about the dodgy Takata airbag, tbh.

Ask them to replace the Thermostat, as compensation.
It doesn't sound THAT difficult... :P

Oh here we go, rag on it for any reason because its not a Ford huh?

Thats fine, still faster than your EF, probably your 5L EL as well :P

the airbag has been sorted yonks ago FYI.

Not too difficult ey?

The process consists of:

Car on stands, RHF wheel off, guard liners out, sump guard off, drive belt off, power steering pump off, washer bottle removed. Thats where i got to today.

But theres more:

i have to re-fit the a/c clutch that come off a few weeke back, and it needs a new idler pulley.

So no, its not a simple job dave lol.

330,000km on the clock and never had any of that stuff done.

True. The sad thing is your swift is probably not far off the pace of my mazda6, until i get it moving lol. The swift has a good 200-300kg weight advantage lol
