deankxf 20,266 Posted April 2, 2017 awesome, looking forward to seeing it soon. that loose steering wheel issue is disturbing.. is the nut a locking type? may be beneficial to fit one if not interesting issue on the 0 deg start.. start ya bastard might have helped as its atomised unlike a puddle of petrol trying to turn into vapour 2 XTREME KARTS XF and Outback Jack reacted to this
Panko 2,480 Posted April 2, 2017 Yeah the guys on the tour that were saw me with the steering wheel removed at the servo were just like, WTF sre you doing? Told them, and their response was the same as yours lol. Its the original nut off the car, so not nylock but castellated or whatever they called them. So its a tight fit, but yeah i might replace it with a nylock. Come to Geelong next saturday ill have it down there. 2 Outback Jack and deankxf reacted to this
2redrovers 21,389 Posted April 3, 2017 If it's a castle nut, shouldn't there be provision for a split pin to lock it in place? Nyloc nut's probably the way to go though. 2 XTREME KARTS XF and Outback Jack reacted to this
Panko 2,480 Posted April 3, 2017 ok so its not a castellated nut. its like a nylock but not if that makes sense.

Sent it back and they swapped it for a SAAS one and no problems. 3 Outback Jack, Panko and 2redrovers reacted to this

For audio, I also have a little external stereo microphone, rather than the onboard mic. 1 deankxf reacted to this
deankxf 20,266 Posted April 4, 2017 any info on the microphone/? BGDAV has a go pro style camera which isn't bad, but inside its water proof case the sound is crap(tempted to unwaterproof it by drilling a hole for the mic. it needs the case to mount in its current form. Panko 2,480 Posted April 4, 2017 I run this microphone vvv https://www.olympus.co.uk/site/en/a/audio_accessories/accessories_professional_dictation/microphones/me_51s_2/index.html depending what model GoPro you have, you need this adapter to run a microphone. http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/accessories-2/3.5mm-mic-adapter/AMCCC-301.html and yes the internal mic quality is horrid, especially when its on the inside of the case. The footage above of the drive up the Mt. is the on board mic I'm pretty sure, because i was using the USB socket to keep it on charge while recording, so i had to ditch the good microphone (i think) 1 Outback Jack reacted to this
'Nova 997 Posted April 5, 2017 Love this trip Panko! Looks like you had a blast! The escort looks good getting along the road too! I have a hero5 session, which isn't great for battery life (about 2 hours give or take), I'll be looking at Hero5 soon just to get some longevity out of the battery! They're a great camera 2 Outback Jack and Panko reacted to this

Panko 2,480 Posted April 13, 2017 Ok, so after last weekend's Ozfalcon Cruise For Glenn, I went into Melbourne to catch up with a mate, and parked the car on the street in the rain. as i suspected, when i returned to the car, i had water inside the boot. And unfortunately, we traced the source of the leak to the rear windscreen. oh this should be fun pulling that prick of a thing out. Escorts are known for leaking around the windscreens, and it usually takes 2 or 3 attempts of screen out, screen in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in, out in...well you get my point haha. so until i fix that, no more wet weather driving for the Escort. because its also affecting the parcel shelf, which has begun to swell up from the water 1 Outback Jack reacted to this

deankxf 20,266 Posted April 13, 2017 should be a how to seal windows answer on google, BGDAVs XE has the same issue, and My gemini also.. why do you need to remove it eleventy times? clean, put sealant.. refit.. fixed? simples? 1 Outback Jack reacted to this

Because the escorts are not supposed to have sealant in them. They use just the locking strip. However someone has stuck sealant in, and quite often in this it makes the issue worse when the sealant starts going hard. And going by the brown rotten colour of the sealant, id say its not doing much. So it will be taken in and out a few times to clean, fit and try it, make sure no rust etc. it may need a new locking strip or new rubber. 1 Outback Jack reacted to this
deankxf 20,266 Posted April 13, 2017 good luck, do the new seals actually seal? rubber isn't rubber anymore 1 Panko reacted to this

Panko 2,480 Posted April 14, 2017 after the tour the other week, i was sick of the radio cutting out. so i decided to investigate. I was rather appalled by the quality of the radio installation. wires weren't soldered, just twisted together, no heat shrink, all just electrical tape. anyway i undid all the crappy leccy tape to find the issue, and sure enough more crap workmanship. this time, they had used a 2.5mm bullet male connector, into a 3.5mm female bullet socket (dont ya hate when she's a lose fit), so the only thing keep the connection together was the leccy tape wrapped around the connection. to fix that i just stretched the male bullet bigger, and squished the female socket down a bit. done, issue 1 fixed. issue 2 was the lack of speaker in the back. simple fix, broken speaker wire at the back of the car. i then got bored and decided to fit one of my Kenwood head units, which back in the day were pretty good, a darn sight better than the cheap thing that was installed in the car. oh and of course it has a remote, so no more having to try reach to the other side of the car to turn the radio down. because i own 2 Kenwood of the same model range, i knew i had a brand new unused wiring loom. I figured id just de-pin the plugs used on the back of the existing head unit and patch the kenwood loom in. well no, i couldn't get the pins out. looking at the plug used by the installer, they looked pretty generic, so went down to autobarn. Winning! they were generic, so generic that i got a plug and play loom to go from my kenwood unit, to those plugs used in the car. here it is, all fitted up and wow what a difference. I've got about 50% more volume, and these actually make the crappy early 2000s speakers sound decent (for what they are) I've decided as part of the audio upgrade in the Escort, id forget about running 2 ways in the back of the car. so i went and picked up from Jaycar an 8" "woofer" (mid range frequencies 70Hz - 4kHz roughly). i very quickly realised i buggered up my measurements and i can't actually fit an 8" in, but can a 6.5" so swapped it for a 6.5". the plan for the woofer is, rather than give it signal just from the rear speaker send like it currently is, which gives me no control over it, and will just make it sound like poo, I'm going to run an amp over the rear woofer, using the sub out on my HU. that way i can drive it as a small sub, and stop it from producing horrible mid range frequencies. this idea brings me to today. i remembered i had somewhere, stashed an EL Falcon premium sound amp in good working order. so i went and hunted that, and this is what ill use to amp the rear woofer. The amp is perfect for my setup. its set in 3ch mode (stereo left right and bridged mono for the 3rd ch..ie sub) so if i want to i can power both my front door speakers and the woofer off the same amp. However, I'm not going to bother. the HU will power the front speakers perfectly fine, ill just amp the woofer so i can hear that over the drone of the engine, and hopefully give me a bit of decent bottom end in the stereo. **ignore the ugly green Fusion amp. its the original amp for an active 10" Fusion sub i used to run in the wagon, which has since fried. otherwise id install the 10" sub for shits n giggles**
