XF Falcon blowing smoke from rocker breather hose and dipstick

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just need some help with a problem im having. I just got my car on the road and it is a 250 crossflow with efi manifold and gas research throttle body.

The problem im having is a smoke coming out or the rocker cover breather hose and slight fumes coming out of the dipstick. I have put a new pcv valve in and checked it, but its still happening. I thought maybe the rings are no good, but it blows no smoke out the exhaust at all and the car runs great.

Any ideas why smoke is coming out of the breather instead of sucking in clean air?

where is that breather hose next to the throttle cable going(under the battery somewhere)

i'd still do a compression test,

a mate of mine with a race engine is fitting a moroso crankcase ventilation system.. might work if there is no other solution

Your compression rings are probably worn but your oil control rings might still be doing their job. You could do a compression test to confirm, you want over 100 psi in each cylinder for it to be deemed healthy. If that's no good, a rebuild is on the cards. Try some thicker oil for now to see if that makes a difference.

An engine flush may either make things better by freeing up a stuck ring, or worse by cleaning the carbon build-up from the sides of the pistons. That's entirely your call.

Try the "Italian tuneup". Get on a stretch of road, put it in 2nd and give it heaps, (I mean flat to the boards) back off and go again a few times. This has a tendency to free up things and blow gunk out the exhaust. You know you've done something good when you come to a stop; your idle will be a tad higher.

It never will suck in clean as its all by product of the combustion process. You got a big open path from crank case to the rocker cover and ALOT of stuff flinging around in there man.

So 2 options are a as Dean said or a a breather tank plumbed to a fuel pump that sucks the gaseous vapor and cycles it thru a catch can and breather cap then onto exhaust. That will insure no oil makes its way into your exhaust which if your muffler fills with oil/fuel then the car has a pop it will explode.

Or like me I run a open -12 line to a breather tank over where the heater box should be and once the car is up to temp there's no more fumes.

The PCV will draw gases out at idle and cruise, basically whenever there is vacuum present. Under these conditions the breather will draw clean air from the air filter into the engine. Under load the opposite happens. The PCV shuts, and gases exit from the breather into the air cleaner and then into the carby/throttle. If the amount of blowby is too much for the PCV to deal with, gas will then come out of the breather, even at idle. This is the classic sign of a worn engine.

Yeah i think a compression test is the first thing i need to do, i got the engine out of a ute i didnt know a lot about and then it sat there for 12 months. So i will do that first and if its okay take it forr a decent drive as you say Greg and then look at catch cans

And the exhaust hose and oil seperater.

Thanks for the info guys ill let you know.

Any other ideas throw em out there

Also greg i dont think there is any gasses coming out at idle, im sure its only under load, but there is a lot of smoke coming out under load

Rings are worn, and compression gases are getting down into the crankcase. Look up 'blow-by' on U-toob. Stay away from the engine flush, it will clean the engine, but by doing so, increases all the 'gaps' inside, making it worse. Just my thoughts...

Let us know how ya go with the compression test. Is this for the Ute in your avatar.? Looks nice.  ;)

Yeah im going to do the compression test in the next couple of days and go from there. Yeah it is the ute in the avatar. Had it for ten years and finally just got it on the road after painting it etc lol

I think either some star-type or mesh design painted gold would look ace, 17" x 7s up front, 8s on the back.

Yeah im thinking 17's still trying to figure out what. Im only new to this site, so i might have a hunt around and see what people have.

Love the color!!

Potential for great engine project??

It did have a 351 clevo in it, but i brought a XY falcon and thats on club reg, so i decided to put a six back in the ute and make it the daily.

Still considering doing some work to this engine or throwing in a newer six, but i want to keep it reasonable on fuel.

Yeah understandable what your saying about being reasonable on fuel. I suppose the outcome of this engine may dictate on what direction you want to take. Plenty of options though to choose from. Plenty of good threads/projects on x-flows that might get you bitten.

...and OHC

I was thinking the same thing... There are some who (from an engineering point of view) would deem an OHC swap an owner-certified modification. As the car is of the same basic design as the XG, one might argue that the body shells are of similar enough design to warrant the differences as being only cosmetic. This would allow a much better selection of engines that could achieve performance with economy, and for very cheap. It's all in the interpretation of the certifier but even if it does require a certificate, it's not as hard as say putting a 460 in an Escort.
