My cars and whatever's in the shop now etc.

Been wanting to do something with the stuff sitting on the bench at home but have usually been too tired. I'd had the idea of playing with aluminium again, tried using one of my models as a form to shape the sheet over but it wouldn't do what i asked it to. Came back fron the shops and had another go with a different idea....

Tadaaa...

A scale ish boot lid... with skin and frame like a real one. After failure to make the rather curvy panels i was trying for ealier, I gave this a shot and it woked rather well. No real measure or plan, just wing it with a yeah that looks about like a 50s custom boot lid... if you squint a bit.

Then came a door, only shell so far but its getting somewhere. No reference, just foggy memory of what most two door shells look like.

Might be a little big but i can shape it down a bit as i go if i want.

Well that was completely unexpected ... and its thrown anything I had thought of for the end of the week right out the window.

Wayne Mercer just asked me to prep his racecar for bathurst. Both quarters need straightening and filler again soooo its going to be some very long days and drives down to Balnarring at the bottom of the mornington peninsula. I'm exhausted just thinking about it....

Because racecar...

That's the corner I remade last time. Just so happens that JB took a liking to it.. or was that dislike?

Other side too

The front damage? Well that was all Wayne's fault... doing a burnout ...into the wall

The rh side wasn't too big, ripped off the filler that was cracked and straightened out the poor brutalised metal as best I could without tearing it up. Its a bit too fat overall, could really use a floor rack to pull the quarter backwards a bit as the whole corner is slightly pushed. Nothing I can do but make it look acceptable.

The left was more work. Mostly because when I fill something, it stays filled lol

It was all cracked up and looked like it should fall out in a slight breeze.. but nooo, I couldn't even chisel it out lol. Strip it disc to the rescue ..

Spent a bit of time going over the panel to flatten it out and try to push a few places out further than previous attempt. Aiming for a bit less filler this time. Speaking of which, picked up a new kind (because it was cheaper)

Its saving grace is its sandability. I got the hang of it by the third skim but the first impression was...."what am I using here, gritty mashed potato? "

I expected it to clog like crap but nope. Sanded pretty easily actually, straight in with 80#.

Last pics are the third skim. That filler is kinda strange. Its not as crap as evercoat rage, kinda like a upol glaze that doesn't move of its own free will but it does not pull in smooth like 3m platinum.

So far the verdict is mixed. It sands well enough that if it was cheaper than others I'd use it again. It has a looong working time but thats not always a good thing as it doesn't pull in tight like 3m (don't need to mess with 3m anywhere near as much) .

There might be merits but I wouldn't bother, generally it's been easy to push back out and keep racing. The metal on the rh especially is so stretched now it's in need of new quarters. Told him I could probably make new steel with the big flares, all in one piece without the need to have welds all through the panel. He's talked about selling or having to sell the car so any major work like that wouldn't happen until things are decided.

He has an Lx torana under a cover that he used to race until the motor blew. A comment was made that he may switch back because why race a big heavy car if you don't have to.

Its not gospel just yet, was talking with one of his offsiders yesterday. Thats where the comments came from. Wayne is talking about selling the ford though for various reasons. Maybe it'll fund another car, I have no idea. The torana is here (brock replica hatch, hell could be real for all I know) parked next to the old xw racecar and the brock group a ss vk. Around the corner is a street xw gt. He did mention how he'd love an xb coupe but... life happening stuff.

Side note: as for racing in TCM, the rules make it faster to be in a relatively light car like the torana. I wouldn't be surprised, if he did actually make the swap, that he'd be further up the field than he is in the big ford. We all love it but it comes down to physics in the end. Push the same HP in a smaller, more agile car and you'll go faster over all. We do however like seeing the big blue beast burn up the straights when he gets the chance.

Bit of guide coat, aka cheap black paint
be6c936be4f471f6b199beb5d46f3c73.jpg
Then lots and lots and lots of sanding
e36d80604d2e60e197fda71ede8ee685.jpgcc6fa632dd31ba3179244dfa800d8000.jpg870b0c69e25237c3eaae12947f5cbef8.jpg2685350741354fe9197b661490e840a3.jpg
Apart from the bottom line this side is pretty well jammed. Some fine sanding to go and a check with fresher eyes.

Other side corner also smoothed over

Still have to rub down that dogleg repair and tidy a few bits here and there. Tomorrow will finish it up.

There's a reason for that ... well two actually, they slowly realised their cars were rusting away under the primer job and they finally got the subtle hints that it just looks crap lol. They moved onto rusted rat heaps instead... saves money on guide coat
