Mr Polson 10,214 Posted August 23, 2015 Okay, so been helping a friend with his XF ute. When he got it the booster was stuffed (no vac assist). So we pulled the booster and master off together, got a second hand working one (was working well, drove on it and all). Replaced the front passenger metal brake line while we were at it as it was damaged. Today we went to bleed the brakes. Back ones went fine. Got to the front ones and neither of them are working. No fluid coming out either brake. Has us a bit stumped. Pedal is rock hard.
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted August 23, 2015 Front Girlock discs and rear drums if it matters. Ute we got the master off had same brake combo.
SPArKy_Dave 8,829 Posted August 23, 2015 Blocked bleed nipples. E-series are bad for it, especially if the dust caps have been missing for ages. 3 Thom, XTREME KARTS XF and Trev Vaa reacted to this
hendrixhc 10,918 Posted August 23, 2015 Shouldnt be to hard to diagnose. If you crack the line fitting you could see fluid flow, eliminating master and lines. etc
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted August 23, 2015 Not the bleeder. Undone it all the way (on both sides) and still no fluid coming out. Cracked both front lines from the master and no fluid. Cracked the rear line and lots of fluid.
hendrixhc 10,918 Posted August 23, 2015 Sounds like master stuffed then.
Trev Vaa 1,185 Posted August 23, 2015 chase your steps backwards, something is blocked if the peddle is hard. first step, undo the brake line from the caliper, if you have fluid coming out there then the calipers are seized, if not next step next undo flex line to hard line, check for fluid, if theres fluid then you have crap in the lines, if not next step then undo master cyl (be careful when you do this) and put a cup underneath it, check for fluid. if fluid comes out check for a pinched hardline and blow line out (make sure its all disconnected) with compressed air, you may have shit in it or the line might be kinked. still no fluid? master cyl needs replacing. check all stages, even if it ends up being the master cyl do not reassemble the whole system, there's a good chance there's shit in the lines that you'll need to clean out. do yourself a favour, wear nitrile gloves. 2 Mr Polson and XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
bear351c 10,260 Posted August 29, 2015 What he said....^ ^ ^ Was the (friends ute) actually working before you started on the brakes? Maybe his brakes were already stuffed? Can you swap the calipers over? Sounds like the master is blocked inside, or the seals are stuffed.
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted August 29, 2015 Gave up and towed it to a mechanic. Turns out it's apparently the wrong master cylinder for the car. Weird as it came off a an identical XF ute with same brake setup.
