xhadyboy 492 Posted September 21, 2017 Hey Action Man I have set of snowies I want to make just like yours. I am in Mexico but as a guide how much does the machining cost ? and where is it done, a specialty wheel place ? And where is the gold e.s.p repo paint from mate ? What size are the tyres 225 x 60 x 15 ? 1 CHESTNUTXE reacted to this
CHESTNUTXE 7,299 Posted September 21, 2017 yep 225 60 is the perfect size for these rims, around $70 per rim for machining, depending on where you go and call ben from global trim in melbourne or google trimmaster ,same place,he makes the gold paint as well absolutley perfect match esp gold,i buy heaps of stuff of him . Valvebouncer 2,389 Posted September 21, 2017 That's a machined rim, have a look at the spokes. ESP rims are as cast, so are ZL sportsman, for all those that want to mock up a set. Just to clarify, are you referring to the face being machined flat like it was on a lathe?I'm assuming they did this towards the end when the casting got a bit daggy?
ESPSIX 143 Posted September 21, 2017 I'm saying that all snowflake wheels have a machined rim, and the surface of the spokes were machined aswell on all snowflakes, except on wheels for ESP's and Sportsman ZL Fairlanes, not because they were getting " daggy ", even "82 Ghia wheels were machined, ZL's were toward the end of the wheels life, yet weren't machined. so, if you want to have a set of gold snowflakes, just like a ESP, either buy a set of ESP rims, and get them recoed, or, find a set of Sportsman rims, and paint them gold. dont do what chestnutxe did, that looks crap, but if you want to go that way, get the face that the center cap sits on machine down so the cap sit level with the spokes, but that will then create other issues with how the cap holds to the rim. it'll still look crap though. SPArKy_Dave 8,863 Posted September 22, 2017 What about NC Fairlane Sportsman Snowflakes? Didn't they run that 'ESP' center cap too?

SirkWhyXF 1,533 Posted December 3, 2017 Got a few questions for those with more experience than I. What's the best way to go about stripping the snowies, sand blasting, soda blasting, or something else? Also what primer is best to use on the alloy? I'll pick up some plastic primer for the new caps. What clear coat do people recommend to finish over the gold? And paint first, machine lips second is the way to go yeah? gerg 10,871 Posted December 3, 2017 I'm by no means a professional, but I water/sand blasted mine with a Karcher attacment (see thread). Came up really good but you'll have to polish the rim again as the blasting dulls it. Start with 600 wet & dry, then 1500, then metal polish. I left mine with a steel wool finish as I didn't want a chrome look. I only went rattle-can acrylic on mine and the finish hasn't lasted well. I'd suggest going 2-pack for the long-term. I polished first, then masked off the rim part to do the centre. It shouldn't matter that the wheel is alloy, as long as the surface is rough enough for the primer to grab (ie not polished). This is a problem when clearcoating a polished rim as the surface is too smooth for the paint to grab. You'll probably have it peeling off in a year or two. For that I don't have a solution except don't polish but instead leave a brushed finish like i did. http://www.ozfalcon.com.au/index.php?/topic/1600-K'archer-Wet-Sand-Blasting:-a-review-(sort-of) Sent from my CPH1607 using Tapatalk
SirkWhyXF 1,533 Posted December 3, 2017 Thanks for the reply gerg. I don't think i'll bother clear coating the polished lips i'll just leave them and polish regularly.
Valvebouncer 2,389 Posted December 3, 2017 Kris, if your interested there is a powder coater in Blacktown who specialises in wheels. He quoted me $500 to blast and powder coat 4 wire spoked wheels for my mgb. I’ll see if I can find his details Edit:http://www.advancedpowdercoating.com.au/ 1 SirkWhyXF reacted to this
