XH V8 wont run on petrol

Recommended Posts

Hey fella's

My XH wont run on petrol, runs on gas and thats it. Fuel pump works and theres injector pulse, now before i start throwing money at replacing the injectors i want to go though the wiring side of it. Fuel pump works as i replaced it and cleaned up the connections at the sender unit when i pulled it out.

Wheres a good place to start chasing for wiring faults?

At the switch theres no wire running into it for the "petrol" side of it

And theres this random relay thats just chilling here, is this relay meant to live in the engine bay somewhere if im correct?

Still have to trace where the wires go to.

LPG control box/ECU

Wiring that runs from the control box leads to here and splits off as you can see

A wire or 2 goes into here

While the others lead to these relays at the convertor

I'll be honerst with ya's, im a noob when it comes to electrical and LPG. So i might be asking some dumb questions lol.

Gas tank needs to come out as its out of date and i want to get it tested. And i need to relocate the convertor as i want to fuck the pod filter right off and run the standed airbox and intake snorkel.

Not fuel-pump related then. Does it fire when you give it something flammable down its guts? Have you tried clamping off the fuel return to eliminate a stuck fuel reg? If not these, sounds like ignition

Can't be ignition if it runs on gas.

Could well be the reg. If there's fuel at the rail and injector pulse it should run since it runs on gas.

Sorry missed the bit where it says it runs on gas

Maybe the fuel pump has shat itself, you could have fuel at rail, but no pressure, injectors will pulse, but no pressure to push fuel out of em.

Have a listen for the fuel pump priming when you turn on ignition before you start it.

Also check ya fuel pump relay and that relay they chucked in at the drivers footwell.

Interesting there is no petrol wire on that gizmo, look around for one thats come off or check if the screw to tighten wire is all the way in, if it is not a wire may of come out.

Jack.

Gee i must be brain dead from working on buses, but you get that when you work on diesel engines LOL LOL

Yes fuel pump works and its got injector pulse. Never thought of using "Start Ya Bastard" down its mouth (again brain dead from work on diesels LOL)

When i get home from trade school tomorrow i'll give it a wirl with starting fluid and clamping off the fuel return line. :)

I decided to buy a new reg as i really didnt fancy pulling the one off the LTD as its been exposed to the weather since theres no bonnet on it now as he sold it.

Will pick up the reg tomorrow during me lunch break at work and fit it when i get home. Fingers crossed that it kicks over on petrol.

Bit of an update:

Got the plenum off, i've also decided to service the injectors, might as well since god knows when it was last ran on petrol. Better to be safe than sorry!!

I noticed that the intake gasket is a Fel-pro one? Has a Ford part number by the looks of it?

Carbon build up from the gas, no wounder why the accelerator pedal was sticking shut. Got a can of throttle body cleaner to fix that up.

Update:

Pulled the fuel rail off and what greated me when i pulled out an injector from the rail was rust and scale.

Looks like im up for a replacement fuel rail, will give reco-ing the original Ford ones myself a go as i've never done it before.

With the gas side of things i need to relocate the convertor Mainly because of the RWC checkout and i want to fuck it right off completely and run the standed airbox.

Is the position of the convertor important for it to work properly and to reduce the possibility of backfiring?

Have it as low as possible in the engine bay , ideally lower than the overflow tank for the radiator, that way it will always be bled . if you have it above , sometimes your converter can get an air pocket and then freeze
