XC Fuel Sensor R/R

Recommended Posts

My 1978 XC GXL Fuel Gauge is OOO

It looks like a resistive earth float system,

Sensor is reading Open cct to Earth,

Gauge moves when Earth applied to lead.

Faulty Sensor  !

Trouble is,

Replacement parts ( Rare spares etc) are available for XA and XB but not XC, So whats the difference ?

As the XC has the float unit half way up the side of the fuel tank,  Whats the best way to get these units out and sealed back in ?

Anybody had to do this ?

There's no difference except for the fuel pipe out of the sender points a different way to the XA XB types.

You have to drain the tank to below the fuel sender opening, then remove it.

Unless you're going to do an immediate replacement, preferably completely drain the tank so it's not sitting around with a half a tank of fuel exposed to whatever.

Most instrumentation shops can repair your original fuel sender, replacing the resistor pack which is usually worn out and usually costs less than an aftermarket sender.

Would be a better option than some of the dodgy imported senders being sold, then you'll retain an original part with good quality internals.

Install a new "O" ring when refitting and make sure you clean all gunk away from around the sender opening and the clamp, to ensure a good ground connection.

howards instruments have the resistor blocks and you can repair them yourself easy as, if not send the unit to howards and they can repair yours and do a full reco

the return rate on the new ones are very low, there has been a bad batch of floats that were damaged and a leak at the wiring pin post on another model but they were all fixed a while ago, there is a new quality control machine checking resistance on every sender and checking the lever arm operation and smoothness across the resistor wiring now too, every return iv had in the last 6 months personally ended up being a wiring fault in the factory 40 year old wiring or dash etc

Managed to get another sensor unit and found the float half full of fuel. Opened up a hole and drained it , soldered it up and its good as new.

Removed mine from the tank and found it had the same problem , small crack in the float.

The 2 units had the cracks in the same place in the copper float. Must be a common weak point.

Anyway its all good now.
