scone 0 Posted October 5, 2014 hey all, I'm having trouble opening the drivers side door on the xf ute. spent ages on it but basically i need to pull the exterior handle up twice before the door will open. It seems to be a problem with the internal catch not going high enough on the first lift of the handle. Would it be something to do with the rod between the handle and the internal mechanism. cheers guys
dvfalcon 352 Posted October 5, 2014 Your door hasn't dropped and the catch on the door isn't resting on latch on the door frame? Dale

I had this same issue on a XF ute i had years ago and i changed out the whole rods and mechanism crap for a good second hand unit and presto, it works. My sister has this car as an old farm hack now and its still working. Find a good door you can test on a car and get the guts from it and get a new handle to, pretty cheap on evil bay. 1 XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
SPArKy_Dave 8,829 Posted October 6, 2014 I spent ages once, adjusting the slack out of the handle rod assembly, by mucking around with the severity of the S bend in the rod. It tightened up everything, and got the mech working like a bought one. Have you checked for freeplay in the rods? 1 XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
scone 0 Posted October 19, 2014 cheers guys i have noticed that the door isnt closing right up so maybe the catch needs moving in a tad?
hendrixhc 10,918 Posted October 20, 2014 Check the hinges for slop as well. they are probably shagged.
deankxf 20,231 Posted October 20, 2014 if it opens fine when you turn the door lock key or pull the lock knob up.. it will be the spring in the latch assyhttp://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Lock-Mechanisms-/33648/i.html?_dcat=33648&Ford%2520Series=Fairmont&Make=Ford 1 XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
scone 0 Posted October 28, 2014 thanks Ill check that. The door lock assembly does move when i lift the handle. I have a new handle on the way as the plastic washer is buggered where the rod goes in. I have straightened the rod out and ill see how we go. cheers.
