Over the past few weeks the speedo in my XF has been dancing a little bit and its begginning to increase. My amp guage is wired directly into the fusable link that powers the dash and shows no change at all when the speedo dances which (correct me if im wrong) would rule out a voltage issue.

I have a few spare transducers, would it be worth my time wriggling underneath it and swapping it out?

I had that trouble in an xe a while ago, turned out that the nylon gear in the auto had worn out. Not the one on the transducer but the one that the transducer runs on. Had to pull the extension housing off the gearbox to replace it but not a huge job to do.

Im hoping its not that gear coz it can be tedious. Ive pulled one off of a box that was out of the car, is it hard to do while the box is in the car?

i had that problem a while ago, it was an issue with the cluster. I took it to a VDO specialist and he knew what the problem was right away. Got the whole cluster reconditioned so they fixed the broken odo while they were at it.

Wasn't a terrible job mate, I think I just put it up on ramps high at the back so the tranny fluid didn't run everywhere. Undid the tailshaft from the diff and once the tailshaft is out there is about 6 or 8 bolts to undo and the housing just dropped off a piece of cake. Think there was a circlip holding the gear on. Once the clip was off it was simple to slide off and replace.

That sounds ok. did you have to replace the extension housing seal too?

I already have a brand new gear in the shed so thats a bonus if/when it gets to that point

I think I was just slack and put some gasket sealant on it instead. Never leaked after that, but it was an old shitbox that I didn't care much about it. They only leak when you want the rest of the car to stay clean.
