I read the second one too.. A long read but worth it. A funny and interesting glimpse of the fun and games that went on. Thanks for posting them up Thom.

I like his way of thinking.. If they didn't say i can't then it's fair game. [emoji41] I love the bit about the extra fuel tanks, that's both genius and scary given its nascar (nah, they never crash into solid objects.. What's a wall anyway?)
-
Clarifying.. 1/8th inch smaller? Which i assume was the tollerance allowed with in the rules for wings and body parts, so why not make the whole car exactly 1/8th in smaller... Still legal officer... Just sayin.. [emoji41][emoji106]

Which ones are they? If its just the bastard star washers that chew up your paint, change the bolts to modern door bolts and use the washers, should fool most. It's funny how if a whole set of something is changed out but looks consistent, the brain usually tells you it's right even if it's not quite.
-
Simple solution, tap a new thread slightly larger than the original and replace with new bolts
-
If I remember right, you can pull the tail lights and soak the back of the strikers in WD40 etc
-
Yep they're a pain to move sometimes but should all have adjustment like door hinges
-
That adjustment is in the strikers at the top where the latches click in. Should have adjustment to loosen and move outwards. Take a photo with it open and I'll point to what I mean if you didn't follow that.

Yeah I wouldn't trust the old slogan on nufinish these days. I highly doubt it's the same formula as it was in the 80s when it was designed to keep acrylic and enamel looking good. The heavier wax like the bowdens should help a lot. $26 is a small price compared to continual rectification if it does protect the paint. There must be something a bit nasty near you (factory or production of some kind) creating a lot of particulate which gets dumped on the car with the short showers. More rain washes it off but short showers will leave it sitting (and active) until dry. Heavy traffic flow nearby will do it too. It's a bitch even for 2k paint, just takes longer to show but by the time it does, your clear is peeling in great big sheets.
-
After a year acrylic should have well and truly cured. Which brand of clear did you use? What wax are you sealing with? I have seen paintwork "watermark" like that but usually takes longer static exposure. May sound dopey but collect some rain in a clean glass and test the ph etc.

If you have the option of a car that has no guards on it, I'd then undo the bolts on the pillar instead of the door. That way you keep the hinges as well as the door shell.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong boys but a 13mm (or whichever size it is) to undo the four door-side bolts plus the pin/bolt on the check strap.

If you're going all out to save weight I'd agree with dipping to strip everything from everywhere, plus removes a lot of problem rust. Go a step further to galvanise it for bare metal finish internals. From a bare shell, learn to metal finish your bodywork, no filler, then a single or two light coats of direct to metal paint, sand and polish.. featherweight paint job done[emoji106]

Hey I want to know these things... doesn't mean it makes sense to me most of the time lol

Better late than never eh [emoji6] I read it all though and I think I even understood it.. think. [emoji41] [emoji106]

I vote for 1200 ute, love those things for a long time. Can't say I've ever given a 120y-would-u-bother much thought but I have seen a few good examples lately and they aren't that bad. I do like a bit of retro-jap action, used to have a 260z 2+2.

Is it legal to remove the heavy bar in the xf rear bumper?

The other option if your aiming to just clean up the looks, grind off the mounting point for the tow hitch leaving the reo bar in place. -

Yeah I couldn't remember the exact make up of those bars. Couldn't remember if there was a light weight core behind plastic as well as the towbar. I'd go wrecker diving with a tape measure and note pad to compare other model cars for a lightweight reo to fit behind the xf cover. Honda accord, vt com, Volvo maybe? Ones I can think of with alloy reo's behind plastic of similar dimensions. Look at front bars too but they may be too curved. -

I don't think there's any legal issue. With the bar reinstalled, any sharp edges are covered for pedestrian safety etc. Just consider the fact that it carries a lot of the impact if you get hit from behind. There would be bars without towbar section, correct? Not all cars had towbars after all. Maybe see if you can find one that you could put your good parts onto? -
Last one I saw he was testing wheel prints, looked odd in blue but should be nice once chromed up. Where was he from?

And some bloody fast escorteryness
