So, after a coupla days on the couch with the Rona, I got back out into the shed, and finished stripping the big block 170.  Crank out, cam out, wash and degrease, kissed the lifter bores with a brake hone, and ran the 3 prong hone down the cylinders.
Angry face...!!  Punched out the little welshy, found the last one behind it.!

Cyl 3 looks like it had a water leak, or was just sitting for years with the valves open.

Look at the dodgy castings from the Sixties.. Didn't even make it a SQUARE..!    Held the gasket up and there ain't much you can do about this. The casting on the back is cut back at 45*, and you easily grind through, and 'cos this is a log manifold, the whole head then goes in the bin.

All the bits, from the guts of the engine, set out with typical ADHD fashion...

Cylinder 5 had a piece of piston ring, or a chipped valve, piece of gravel bouncing around inside. There's some damage to the piston, and the head. Nothing too serious.

.......now to make a valve spring compressor.

They are a lot better than what they were,he used a round stone cutting type thing with a 11/32 fitting that slides into head where the valve goes ,or pay $600 to set it up on the valve seat cutting machine arr no thanks this will be fine for a stock engine

I can still see some putting on those seats, I hope your head guy is confident that they'll lap in like that

Sorry I meant seats. I was lucky when I got mine done up, someone had done inserts before. Guides needed doing though.

Did they already have inserts or just factory hardened iron?

Yeah I dunno, if you grind that hump out, it actually looks decent. The inlets might look big, but the shape doesn't look great (that's what she said). I reckon the inlets are the restriction here. It looks typically Ford of that era, with a ramp up on the floor and a sharp turn before the throat. Pretty much just 2V Clevos but slightly scaled up.

For the time being, cost effectiveness, i have kept the blocks.

in due time I will go new aftermarket springs. Probably reverse eye, single lead parabolic springs.
will handle a lot nicer, and sit proper low 😆

If you go back to the start of this thread when i first bought the car, I had to run blocks, with an offset centre pin to correct the fact the front spring eye on the driver’s side was 10mm backwards on the chassis compared to the passenger side.

part of the resto, this has been corrected, so yeah for cost thing, ive just corrected the offset pin on the blocks and refitted them.

im fine with running blocks. I run them in the wagon too

Shit run mate, hope you get through it ok. A lot of people I know got put right on their arse with it for days.Sounds like it might have been a thing to do where a running engine was too good to throw out so they made use of it in a boat, etc. I remember something similar where they milled the log and runners off, bored the ports round and epoxied or pressed steel tubes in to make long runners for either mechanical injection or multi carbs.

My Dad was telling Me about 30yrs ago of taking the 144-250 log head and milling off the inlet log and making a better manifold(he was half considering doing it for My brothers XB engine that he bought a "Yella Terra" head from swap meet for(just bigger valves, probably throat porting but still had the full log. be interesting to mount an XF style plenum on to one with banana type runners etc.

there is also good news on the heads,olm8 is machining them and cutting the seats to seal better,he did just 1 seat while i was there and the difference was incredible from what they were.

Hey hae you ever seen someone cut 2 more holes in the log, mill a flange onto it and blank off the original for twins, or leave the middle as well and fit 3 carbys? I seem to remember a boat engine with that done.
