Installing alarm and remote locking in XF

Trying to install an alarm at the moment and need to know if the door switches are negative or positive switched? On the door switch itself, one wire is green with yellow and one is black with blue. Do I just tap into one of those? If so, which one? Any help/advice appreciated.

    Acceptable Orange peel

I just repainted my bumpers in the shed, they have orange peel but nowhere near that bad. It could be just the photos but it does look pretty bad compared to what we did in the shed! and Dad and I are no professionals haha It almost looks like a hammer tone finish, I would see if it settles down and if not take it back to the shop

    Gearbox change

Nope, no plate - just a mark on the inside where there should be a hole

    Gearbox change

We're doing this exact thing in my Fairlane. Pedal box needs to be change and can be done with the dash in, taking the drivers seat out makes it a lot easier! Like already said, you need a clutch cable and a clutch cable bracket. We found that there was a mark already on the inside of the firewall for the hole - but still needs to be drilled out. When it is all hooked up the firewall is quite weak and bends a lot when the clutch is engaged, so we made a plate that strengthens this up a bit, well a lot. You also need a manual center console the original console needs to be cut as it doesn't quite fit.

I used plastic modeling paint mixed in with a little bit of thinners, that way its not to thick and heavy to work properly.

    Professional respray

Yeah it comes in a spray can so its nice and easy to use. I wouldn't say I am any where near a professional but the results are really good! Page 1 of my build thread has the pics and the process - http://www.ozfalcon.com.au/index.php?/topic/206-1981-zj-fairlane/

Im pretty certain it is enamel, the can says 1K FILLCLEAN System. The undercoat was K&H Plasti-Prime. I am pretty certain this isn't in stores any more but Im sure there are other brands that doi the same thing

I actually did this myself. I got a paint shop to mix up some paint that was colour matched from the door armrest. They didn't get the colour match perfect but they got it close enough, which was good enough for me as I painted all of the interior plastics. It cost around $100 all up from a place called Haymans in Portland Vic. The parts have actually come up really good and it even hardened up the parcel shelf seat belt covers that were turning to dust.

    Sub Box

Hey Guys I'm trying to design a sub box for the boot of the zj but I am having a problem with getting a design that will work with all the different sizes in the boot. I want to box the whole boot for neatness. Does anyone have any good sub box designs that they want to put up? Cheers

    Sub Box

Im not too worried that it will break, it's not going to be a ground shaker (I don't listen to that type of music haha). Its only a single 12 inch that probably won't ever get thrashed so it should be all good.

    Sub Box

Fair enough, I just went with what I found on the net. It was never going to be perfect but it should be good enough for what I need. If it breaks I'll build a new, better one anyway haha Dad picked up some carpet a while ago so we have all that sorted. Thanks anyway

    Sub Box

its 12mm thick which after some research I found that it is a small as you can go, and MDF seemed to be what most sites said to use so we went with that... It should be completely sealed because we screwed it and glued it haha after that we put down some glue on all the inside joins so it should be all good for that. It seems very stable so im not sure what more bracing we could do, what would you recommend?

    Sub Box

Yeah the sub box had to be between 1.1ft to 2.1ft and it came out at about 1.7ft so it should be all good. Definitely, it neatens up the boot so much.

    Sub Box

haha its dads drill, had it forever but still work great We haven't hooked it all up yet but Im hoping it sounds good

    Sub Box

Well last weekend dad and I made our own and it came out pretty well. still need to put the carpet on but that should be easy. It's got a decent lean on it because it had to clear the boot springs and the spare Tyre compartment.

    Fuel return line

Thanks for the info ZL. I was talking to one of the old hands around here this morning and he suggested the same thing!!

    Fuel return line

ok, we've managed to get the XE motor running in the ZJ. However, the weber on the XE motor has a fuel return where the original carby didn't. We need to fabricate up a return fuel line. What's the best material to use? Anything we need to look at for?
  25. Hi All, We've managed to install the XE motor into the ZJ and get it all wired up. Tried cranking it into life the other weekend but couldn't get it started. Worked out that the timing was way out (blow back thru the carby was teh main hint....). So we re set the timing. By that stage, there was way too much fuel in the system so we left it for a week. We went to try and start it again, but noticed that the electrics were doing some strange things; the interior light is very dull and the indicators in the dash both light up when you turn the key to the on position. Now when you try to start it, there is nothing - it won't crank. We checked the power to the cut off solenoid on the carby with the ignition to on and the test light only just glowed, so there's an earth somewhere. The battery is fully charged. Any ideas on where to start looking? We have another harness from a ZK, but we don't wan to pull everything apart just yet. thanks
