  1. hi guys

my 93 xg has a loud ticking and is very slugish.
when it is started (starts perfectly and new starter) has a very loud ticking in thee top end at the back of the head tick loud for 15-30 secs then u can hear it slowly get quieter till it is a very quiet but still there, after another 30-60 sec gets even fainter. if u try drive before it has stopped this process the ticking is super loud and u can feel the motor like rocking around.
once its done its thing and ur driving u can always hear a ticking.
all so it seams a bit slugish dont get me wrong it can pull a loaded trailer but its a ute when empty i should be able to wiggle the back end a bit. when u put ur foot down it goes but not like it wants to i dont know how t explain it.
    new plugs and leads
    all oils
    petrol filer
    starter motor
where should i start with ticking sounded like oil wasnt getting ther quick enugh so changed it to  10/30 helped a tiny bit but no
    where should i start
    cherz guys
Sounds like dirty lifters, try an oil flush, drop all the oil after, new filter and try some oil around 20W50 or 20W60. I use Penrite HPR 30 in mine now.
Just do the flush because its usually crud stuck in the lifter makes them noisey.
If that doesnt fix it.....new lifters, can do it at home easy peasy.

  2. You got an EL XR6 ecu? If so your lucky.
Rare as rocking horse shite. I got one in my box here. 6TAC.
You might need-, MAP sensor, usually on body behind coolant tank on XG or similiar spot on E series,, just because xf run a MAF set up.
Pin outs are on ECU , so easy peasy.

  3. Has anyone tried just using the pinouts on the ecu and running the ecu as a stand alone unit?
Pre smartlock ecu are cheap and everybody is after EL ecus for chipping.

The EL ecu I have played with as well, bit faster processing, can plug a j3 in (which tuners HATE because to affect changes to the j3 chip for tuning, it has to be unplugged, programmed and replaced, tuners do stuff on the dyno in REAL time.)
To tell you the truth runs better with less probs on a standard XH ecu, which is EL without all the fruit, but still has Fartlock.

  4. Maybe go a carb mate. You can run a carb in an xf as they came out with them.

    Then theres no wiring probs.

Good manifold (Aussiespeed) and a nice carb around 450cfm, 600 holley is a lil large.

ECUs, wiring, sensors suck, can chase your tail.

Good carby set up on a 4L....sound tits and you can go larger cams and only change is springs, retainers etc.....no chips, no retuning the motor for changes. Just need a carby fuel pump and reg.

Use a Carter Gold series pump and Malpassi fuel reg set up.

  5. I still have the other block at 030 and managed to find a set of main caps but wondering if it's even worth paying $700 odd dollars to get it line bored ,if I did ,is a 030 block even worth that much ?

Not sure mate. Good big blocks are getting harder to find. I just like watching you put them together.

  6. You can paint over chrome, you will only see the outer edge right?
Get some rough as guts sandpaper, tear the chrome finish up so the paint has something to bond to, then cross sand with 80 grit, that will hold colour.
Smooth surface can also be sprayed over with etching spray and then sprayed with black also.

  7. Heres a listing for a mellings oil pump, I think you can use their oil pick up on all of their pumps.

    Pump $70, pick up $65.

If not, wreckers mate, pull sump off, grab pick up, make sure filter screen is good.....done.

Take home , clean up and chuck her on.

  8. Gooday to Everybody and I hope you are all Travelling Pretty Well. Now I'm about to Buy some Head Bolts for a sohc 4.0 and I see on E-Bay the prices can Vary from $40 to $110 before you go to ARP  Hi-Dollar stuff. Are they all the same? The MACE Engineering look better and come with a washer. And maybe they are made in Australia. I did read in a Ford magazine about a Jim Mock sohc rebuild and he said that you can use 2nd hand head bolts as long as they are in good condition!  I don't wanna stuff this up on Experiments.I bought a Enduro Tech head gasket kit that does'nt come with the Bolts Again any Advice or Opinions or Experience is Appreciated and I won't be Offended. Have a Great Nite.
Hey Searley, Nason or similar like Permaseal, they are a decent set for not a lot of coins ,unless your going high hp ,no need for studs really.
ARP bolts for sure for flywheels etc or big end bolts.

  9. XF and XG should be the same radiator, as it's the same front end.
E series are the rounded front end that came out later on the xh, so you will probably find they are the interchangeable ones for straight bolt in.

  10. I'm here to make motoring fun, I've seen it all mate

EFI is great but aftermarket stand alone EFI with ecu. $$$
Carbs are a great way to get hands on mechanical knowledge without the fault finding nightmares of the earlier 1/2 mechanical 2/3 ecu systems..
